Environmental Science Homework

Welcome to the 2008 - 2009 school year. Throughout the year we'll be
learning about how many things in the "real world" we live in can be
explained and better understood through science. I'm looking forward to a
great year - But remember - I need your help. Let's not forget the
importance of taking notes, being attentive in class, reading your text
book or online material, doing practice problems, using your resources to
correctly answer homework problems, and handing in homework on time.
Remember, it's your grade and your education - so strive for greatness!

Climate Change Research Assignment

Instructions:
This is a research assignment, which means you will use the internet or
other sources to find the information to answer the questions. Please number
your answers to correspond to the questions and be sure to answer everything
asked in the question in your own words (no cutting & pasting). This
assignment is to be done individually, so an assignment that is the same as
another will not be acceptable. Your information should mostly come from
doing internet searches from sites such as “Google”. Be sure your sources
are written by authors who have experience and credentials in their field,
and identify the author when asked to. At the end of your report, cite your
references. You should have at least two different references for your
information in the report. Your assignment will be graded on how well you
have followed the instructions and answered all of the questions, and will
count as a homework grade. The assignment is due Feb. 17 (For B day classes)
and Feb. 18 (for A day classes).

Items to cover in your report:
1.	Explain what the greenhouse effect is, and how it is affecting our
climate? (Identify what the 2 most abundant greenhouse gases are and where
greenhouse gases come from).
2.	Is the climate warming? How long has it been warming, and by how
much has it warmed?
3.	What role can human activity be playing in the current global
warming trend? (In other words, identify three ways are we emitting
excessive carbon dioxide into the atmosphere?)
4.	What long term negative effects could result from the planet
warming? (Identify at least three effects).
5.	Find evidence that the planet is in a cooling trend, and find a
quote from some educator or scientist that believes the planet is cooling.
6.	What natural forces outside of human control could affect climate
change and global warming? (Include the name and title of at least one
educator or scientist that believes that most global warming is caused by
natural causes or fluctuations)
7.	What can we as a society do to decrease the amount of greenhouse
gases we are emitting? (Name at least 3 things and explain how they would
limit greenhouse gases).
8.	Are there any unusual costs to people or any other negative factors
in implementing your three suggestions from the previous question?
9.	The Kyoto Protocol was created in an effort to limit carbon dioxide
emissions by instituting a system called “cap-and-trade”. Explain what “cap
and trade” means, and identify some potential problems with using it.
10.	In your own opinion, how serious a problem is the issue of global
warming? Is it the most important issue we face as a society? If not, what
issues do you feel deserve our attention and financial investment?
