Statistics Syllabus

 

                       Elementary Statistics

Instructor:  Mr. Bob Busch
Text: Triola, Elementary Statistics, Pearson, 10th Edition, 2006.

Required Materials: You need a text book, composition book, and pencils.  
The Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus graphing calculator is required.  The Texas 
Instruments TI-83 Plus is the calculator I will teach operations on.  This 
will also be used again in your higher level math and science studies.  
Additionally, we will frequently use Excell in computations.  You should 
plan to carry your laptop to class.

Course description: This statistics course is planned as a “one-semester 
survey” introduction to statistics.  The goal is to provide you the 
foundations of basic statistics in preparation for a statistics class in 
college or university.  The curriculum will include:
•	Introductory terminology
•	Summarizing and graphing data
•	Describing, exploring, and comparing data
•	Probability
•	Probability distributions
•	Normal probability
•	Estimates and sample sizes
•	Statistical process control

Grading: Grading will follow the guidelines found on page 7 of your 
planner.  A formal exam will be given at the end of each chapter, as well as 
a semester exam.  Exams will be a problem format with a frequent vocabulary 
and writing component.  Quizzes will be frequent and unannounced.  
Reinforcement assignments will be given on a daily basis.
•	Tests 50%
•	Quizzes 30%
•	Homework 20%
•	Special projects as required

Discipline: Discipline policy will follow page 2 in your planner.  The 
primary rule is respect for yourself, your fellow students, and your 
instructor.
