My decision to become a math teacher was made in high school,(many moons
ago), more out of necessity than love for the subject. As a high school
student, I learned that MATH class was the one subject that got my
attention. It was difficult! It was abstract! When am I ever going to use
this stuff? Nobody likes it! It did, however, earn my respect, and, by
meeting and beating the challenge of this complex subject, my academic
confidence soared. If I can "DO MATH, THEN I CAN DO ANYTHING!" This is the
present day message of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It
is this personal discovery that math teachers, everywhere, encourage and
develop in their students.

I have taught at Pendleton since it first opened in August 2000.
Over that time, the school has grown from an enthusiastic student body of 70
eager faces and 9 teachers to a staff of 40 and a student enrollment of over
400. Now our graduating classes are bigger than the entire school in
2000. We have experienced many changes and our share of growing pains,
but one thing never changes: those eager new faces that await us each fall
and the smiling, friendly faces of the returning "old guard". To all my
students, new and old guard, please read my "Open Letter to a Pendleton
Student", below.
Good luck to all as we start the new school year!

'OPEN LETTER TO A PENDLETON STUDENT'

TO ALL MY STUDENTS:

Welcome to Pendleton. As you begin your exciting journey here, I want to
share some thoughts with you.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL: If you thought Pendleton was a school for “dumb jocks”,
think again! Look around you and you will see young men and women who are
focused. They are smart, savvy and competitive. Their looks may deceive
you, however, as they zigzag across the campus, sports gear and sneakers in
tow! But watch out! The Pendleton student is as competitive in the
classroom as he is on the field, court, or course. So JOIN THE CROWD!

ABOUT YOUR TEACHERS: The Pendleton teacher is dedicated to giving you a
fine college preparatory education. She has advanced degrees and years of
teaching experience. He has traveled, worked and studied in many parts of
the world. She understands this campus and will push, prod, cajole and
INSPIRE you to be your best, both in the classroom and on the athletic
field. Together with your coaches, your teachers will be your ‘guardian
angels’, watching as you make the big adjustments needed to succeed here.

ABOUT YOUR CLASSMATES: Most of your fellow classmates are trim, fit, gifted
athletes with lofty goals for their future. The ultimate dream is to make
the pros. Many plan to earn a sport scholarship to a Division 1 college.
These aspirations and dreams are not achieved easily. Get on board and BE
INSPIRED!

ABOUT THE ACADEMY: At the first light of dawn, look out your dorm window
and you will see people on the move. (You will be one of them very
shortly.) Some will be jogging to the fitness center or pool for an early
morning workout. Before the sun comes up, the tennis courts will be
bustling with activity. As the players grunt and groan and smack those
little yellow balls around, each one of them wants to be the next tennis
superstar. Listen to the coaches in the dome as they shout
encouragement to their prodigies to become faster, stronger, more
dedicated. Listen for the grunts and groans. Watch as buses depart for
golf courses and tournaments and places, near and far, with young bodies
that are barely awake. Listen for the grunts and groans. BE INSPIRED!

ABOUT THE DAILY GRIND: Your classmates will do all this while they juggle
school, fitness and sports training without the benefit of parents to take
care of their daily needs. They will have to make their bed, deal with
laundry, eat nutritionally and balance homework, studying, socializing and
all the accompanying pressures and stress, as they strive to be number one.
They will live their lives within the confines of these cement walls, hoping
that these sacrifices will make them the next Paula Creamer or Freddie Adu.
BE INSPIRED!

ABOUT THE EXCITEMENT: If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a
sports hero. It could be Tommy Haas, pulling in the parking lot in his
BMW. Maybe Serena, Venus or Maria will grace the courts as they huddle
with Nick, trying to get that extra edge. Perhaps a pro football player
will come here to do yoga and ballet (I am serious.)…..or a basketball star
will spend the week shooting a million baskets. This is where
the big names come to do the things that make them champions. BE INSPIRED!

…YOU ARE A PENDLETON/IMG STUDENT
…YOU ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY
…USE IT WISELY. BE SMART. STAY HEALTHY
…ENJOY THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!
