Homework will begin near the end of the first six weeks...please be patient 
as we build our skills and responsibilities.  Thank you!

Kindergarten Homework Basics

Please help your child prepare for homework with these three simple steps.

1.  Have a designated PLACE to complete the work.  The kitchen table, or a 
small desk or lapboard are some suggestions.

2.  Have a designated TIME to complete the work.  Being consistent, breaking 
up the work over several days, and sticking to a schedule are vital skills 
to learn for later success in life and school...start now!

3.  Have a designated BOX OF SUPPLIES available that are only for doing 
homework.  A shoebox filled with crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks, an 
eraser and pencils is a simple solution, and saves time...no rushing around 
the house, trying to find a green crayon!

Please look for homework packets to come home on Friday!

Mrs. Wright’s Homework Policy

The following guidelines help define the homework expectations for my 
kindergarten class.  Please read and keep in a safe place.  If you have 
questions or concerns, please contact me by phone, email, or note.  Thank you!

Homework is given as a small packet on Friday.  The completed packet is due 
on the following  Friday MORNING.  Homework is primarily your child’s 
responsibility.  Please help me teach responsibility by making your child 
accountable for pulling the packet out of the folder, working on it *mostly* 
by his/herself, and returning it to their folder before school on Friday 
morning.  You are welcome to read directions and monitor their work, but 
remember that I grade mostly on effort and responsibility.  If a homework 
packet is lost, I will replace it AFTER receiving a note from the parent, and 
make a note of the replacement.  If your child frequently loses his/her 
homework packet, I may follow up with a phone call to the parent so we can 
find a solution.

Graded homework packets will be marked with either a check √,  a star *, or 
an Incomplete I. 
Check √ = mostly complete, mostly correct, possibly not your child’s best 
effort, according to past work samples.
Star * = complete, mostly or completely correct, best effort shown according 
to past work samples.  
Incomplete I = more than one page not complete or attempted, possibly lacking 
effort according to past work samples.

Incomplete or frequently missing homework will affect your child’s “work 
habits” grade starting in first grade, so please help your child form a good 
habit now.

The reading log, located in your child’s folder underneath the calendar, is a 
part of homework.  I check these frequently, and goals are set that can be 
reached by the end of the month.  Please record only one book read “together” 
and possibly one book read “alone” on each day.

Homework packets will include a cover sheet, which lists activities related 
to what we are studying in class.  SOMETIMES these activities will be 
required, sometimes they will be optional…please read the cover sheet 
carefully each week.

Different homework packets may be given based on a child’s individual needs.  
Please do not expect your child to be doing exactly the same work as another 
child in the class.

IF you find that homework is a real struggle for your child, PLEASE let me 
know quickly.  I try to give assignments that review material already taught 
in the classroom, and that your child should be able to complete with little 
help, in about 15 minutes a night (plus reading log time).  If homework is 
taking much longer than 20 minutes nightly, please tell me so we can discuss 
some options to help your child be successful.  I suggest a parent explain 
the work, then check for understanding, and let the child work alone for 5-10 
minutes to see how they can do independently.  If your child is struggling to 
stay on task or being defiant, please stop the work, put it away, and let 
them learn the consequences of not completing these assignments.  I will be 
happy to talk with your child when the incomplete work comes in about the 
importance of homework as one of their responsibilities.
