We begin the school year with an under the sea fish theme in the art room. The children are thinking about fish and creating 'rainbow fish' pictures that will be borrowed and scanned into posters for the Southside foundation fundraiser to support our dance program.
Next, we collage tissue papers to boards and form little fish out of Model Magic modeling compound. The children mix primary colors into secondary colors by kneading the compound. They also find little extras to glue on their boards for details. Miniature under sea worlds are created.
The first graders follow this up with fish made from a slab of clay. Again this allows us the opportunity to discuss parts of the fish. The slab fish are fired and will be painted and should be ready to go home right before autumn or right before winter break, depending on the art schedule for your child.
Because of schedule considerations, activities may or may not include, or be limited to, these exact activities, and may go in different order for different classes.
