4 Box Portraits

The students learn about Warhol, Picasso and Matisse and apply what they see to a four box self-portrait in oil pastel and watercolor.

The pictures below this are from the 2011-2012 school year.

Keith Haring inspired marker pictures

Children viewed many images made by 'Pop" artist Keith Haring. They made their own marker pictures using many of the same elements Haring used in his art: bright uniform color, few details, movement lines and outlines.

Students were encouraged to express a feeling or situation in their pictures.

Four box self-portraits

The multiple image layout was taken after the work of Andy Warhol. Students learned about Warhol, Matisse and Picasso for this project. Henri Matisse's patterns and colors and Pablo Picasso's blue period inspired the work for two of these colorful boxes. We discussed color schemes and the students chose a color theme for a third box.
Their fourth box was 'free choice'.

Matisse inspired collages

Henri Matisse, 'the Fauve' called his collages 'cut outs' and prepared painted paper especially for his work. Fifth graders used construction paper and cut out organic, free form, and geometric shapes. Then they organized and glued down their pieces with a theme in mind.
