Quarter One 2012 Self-portraits

These self-portraits give hints about the children who made them. After drawing him or herself, the head area is surrounded by pictures about what the student enjoys; activities, people, toys etc. In the lower part of the picture the child shows a plate of his or her favorite foods.

August 2012

First graders created pictures with borders using rulers and filled them with patterns. They made a picture of a scene of daily life from their memory.

The pictures below this point are from the 2011-2012 school year.

The children used Model Magic to create undersea creatures for their assembleges.

Under the Sea Model Magic Collage/Assembleges

The children made a tissue paper collage on a board using a variety of papers and 'found objects' from the art room. Then they formed little sea creatures out of Model Magic and these were attached.

Elmer the Pattern Elephant

Using the Book 'Elmer' by David McKee as inspiration, the children made their own Elmer elephants covered with patterns.

Colorful Fish in Marker

Children created colorful fish in a sea grass environment. They practiced careful coloring as they designed their own fish. These were used for the P.T. A. fundraiser.

'Audubon Birds' in Water Color

Children learned about the artist John James Audubon and viewed examples of his bird pictures. They designed their own birds. Next they used only red, yellow, and blue paint to mix the secondary colors in their pictures. The branches were made by mixing all three primary colors together.

Warm Tempera Animals

The children used shapes to draw creatures. They learned about warm colors, then painted their pictures with yellow and red mixing orange.

Cool Greens

The children were given yellow and blue tempera paint and experimented with different amounts of each to mix a variety
of greens creating an abstract design image.
After they had several greens mixed, they were given white,
blue, green, and electric green to experiment with more
color mixing. These were glittered with green glitter, then finished with red paint for a colorful contrast.

Pattern Masks

First graders viewed examples of masks from around the world. Many masks have symmetrical designs or patterns for decoration. Students proceeded to made their own version of a colorful mask using marker and tag board.
