There are many different ways to make art. This spring the children make flowers for their still life collages using a printmaking or stamping technique. They ink rubber flowers then press the paper on them for an interesting effect. These are glued into a still life. Next the children create landscape collages. They look at a variety of landscape examples; works of Grant Wood, Cezanne, and Gauguin inspire their creativity.

As we moved through winter the first graders painted with watercolors. They explored color mixing and make paintings using only red yellow and blue to create the other colors. Bird paintings based on the work of Audubon, and also colorful clowns are just two of the pretty pictures that should be coming home.

In quarter 2 the children were thinking about fish and creating 'rainbow fish' pictures that will be borrowed and scanned into posters for the Southside foundation fundraiser to support our dance program. The first graders follow this up with fish made from a slab of clay. This also allows us the opportunity to discuss parts of the fish. The slab fish are fired and painted and should be ready to go home right before or after winter break, depending on the art schedule for your child.

In quarter two we looked at masks from around the world. We noted the patterns, use of line, shape and color, and the different materials used in mask making. The children made colorful masks with marker and also created little masks using Model Magic, a playdough like substance that dries hard.

The first graders began the school year with personal art. Sometimes art is made to recall a memory, or express who we are as individuals. Art can also reflect our cultural heritage.

We started quarter one unit with a look at the work of Carmen Lomas Garza. She paints pictures of scenes from daily life. This project begins as the children use rulers to create a border and fill the border space with a pattern. Inside this colorful frame the children draw a scene from their memory.

In quarter one we ask, "What do you like to eat?" Our food choices may reflect our culture or background. We discuss different food choices and view a few media clips about different foods. Children then create a plate with drawings of their favorite food.

The plate of food activity leads into a self-portrait activity. The children draw themselves surrounded by the activities and objects they enjoy the most. The finished plates are then glued to the self portrait.

Because of schedule considerations, activities may or may not include, or be limited to, these exact activities, and may go in different order for different classes.

.
