Mr. Petersen graduated from the University of Miami, and received a Masters
degree from Barry University. After working in Dade County Public Schools
for 17 years, Mr. Petersen was appointed to the State Department of
Education, as the National Science Foundation Regional Coordinator for the
Statewide Systemic Initiative to improve the teaching and learning of
Mathematics and Science in Elementary schools. Missing the interaction with
the students, he was appointed to Beckford-Richmond Elementary's new Zoo
Magnet school, as the Lead Teacher. After two years at this position, he
was again missing the interaction he receives from the students he teaches
and applied for a Science position at Southwood Middle. He currently
teaches sixth grade. He was elected "Teacher
of the Year" for Southwood, and was a finalist for Teacher of the Year
2006, Region Center Five of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
My mission for Sixth Graders, at Southwood, is to become confident with the
skills of solving problems. I want my students to leave this classroom with
a knowledge of the world around them, an inquiring mind that is not afraid
to question and systematically resolve solutions to their questions, and a
desire to continue their education so that they may become life-long
learners and contributing members of a global society.
