Music Grading Policy

Grades 6-8:

The Daily Participation Grade is based on each student's level of participation. If the student is doing everything he/she is supposed to be doing in class -- full participation, no disruptive talking or actions, and is fully attentive in class -- then he/she will receive a grade between 95 and 100 for the day.  A grade of 100 represents consistent and exceptional participation.  For each infraction of behaviors that disrupts the class or causes the student to be less than fully attentive and participating, there will be 20 points removed from the daily grade. These behaviors include talking when the student should be listening and paying attention in class, being inattentive to the teacher and the activities of the class, and lack of participation (or lack of effort).  For blatant lack of participation, 20 points will be removed from the daily grade.  The daily participation grade will be reflective of the student's level of participation for the day.

For middle school, 60 percent of the quarterly grade will be based on participation and 40 percent of the quarterly grade will be based on written assignments, tests, and projects.

Grades 3-5:

The Daily Participation Grade is based on each student's level of participation. If the student is doing everything he/she is supposed to be doing in class -- full participation, no disruptive talking or actions, and is fully attentive in class -- then he/she will receive a grade between 95 and 100 for the day.  A grade of 100 represents consistent and exceptional participation.  For each infraction of behaviors that disrupts the class or causes the student to be less than fully attentive and participating, there will be ten points removed from the daily grade. These behaviors include talking when the student should be listening and paying attention in class, being inattentive to the teacher and the activities of the class, and lack of participation (or lack of effort).  For blatant lack of participation, a minimum of 15 points will be removed from the daily grade.  The daily participation grade will be reflective of the student's level of participation for the day.

The majority of the quarterly grade is based on daily participation. There will be occasional tests and in-class written assignments, which will be averaged in with the participation grades.

Grades 1-2:

The grading scale for grades 1 and 2 includes E, G+, G, S+, S, N, and P. Each student will begin with a G+ for his/her daily participation grade. If a student demonstrates exemplary participation, then he/she will receive an "E" for the daily participation grade, which stands for "excellent."

E = Excellent, G+ = Very Good, G = Good, S+ = Very Satisfactory, S = Satisfactory, N = Needs Improvement, P = Poor

For each infraction of behaviors that disrupts the class or causes the student to be less than fully attentive and participating, the student's daily participation grade will be dropped a letter grade (e.g., from G+ to G). These behaviors include talking when the student should be listening and paying attention in class, being inattentive to the teacher and the activities of the class, and lack of participation or lack of effort. At my discretion, IF a student has consistently maintained a G+ average throughout the quarter, I MAY choose to bump up the final grade to an E.

Kindergarten:

Kindergarten students are not included in PowerGrade, so you will not see daily participation grades, only end-of-the-quarter grades. The same infractions listed above impact the students' overall grades. These behaviors include talking when the student should be listening and paying attention in class, being inattentive to the teacher and the activities of the class, and lack of participation or lack of effort.

To All Parents:

I want each and every student to have success and a positive learning experience in music class. Cooperation and attentiveness in class will go a long way toward reaching that goal.

If you have any questions concerning the grading policy or your child's behavior or grade(s) in music class, please direct your questions to the music e-mail address.

Thank you!
