Is there somewhere other than the classroom for my child to take an AR test?

Yes! Before school in the Media Center from 7:15 to 7:35 a.m. Students are
also given an opportunity to catch up on taking AR tests during their weekly
library visit. Middle school students can take AR tests before school and
when they visit the library to check books in and out on a classroom pass and
after they have eaten their lunch.

What happens if I have lost my library book?

Come by the Media Center and tell us that you've lost the book. If you still
can't find it after a few weeks we will issue a bill. Or if you would just
buy us a new copy of the title you have lost. Gets that book back on the
shelf
faster.

Do middle school students have access to the Media Center for research?

Absolutely! The doors are open by 7:15 a.m. every morning during the school
week. During the day the middle school teachers issue passes for students to
come to the Media Center to check books out or to do research. The Media
Center is also open during Middle School lunch - students can come in to
study, check out books, take AR tests, do homework, research, use the
computer
lab for word processing or to just sit and read. Some teachers will bring
their entire class to the Media Center so she/he can direct their research.

How many books can I check out at one time?

Middle School students can have as many as four books checked out at
one time. Lower grade students can have at least two. Kindergarten
students just check out one book at a time.

If I finish my books before my scheduled library day can I check out another ?

We like for the students, especially in the lower grades, to come to
library on their scheduled day and to return their books then. But, there
are times when students need to return books early and check out
more. Time out of class to come to the library is the problem in the
lower grades, but students are always welcome to come to the Media center
before the 7:40 bell.

My child forgot his/ library books on his library day. Will he be in trouble?

NO! What we try to impress on the children is responsibility for their
own books. But if they happen to forget their books we tell them ("IT'S
NO BIG DEAL!" Everyone forgets things from time to time. However,
students may not check out more books if they have forgotten their
books from the week before. We do have magazines for them to look at
after the story and while the other students are checking out their books.
Reminders are sent home but it is just a REMINDER. If after several
weeks the books are still not returned we will issue a bill to the student
to take home. Students may also return and check out books any morning
before the 7:40 bell.

How much are fines and are the parents notified?

Elementary school students have never been charged fines for late books.
We decided a couple of years ago to eliminate fines in the middle
school. With the new computer system, students will be monitored
more closely than in past years. The system will not let students keep
checking out books without returning what they already have. We also
felt it would be a nice change of pace, setting a more positive tone with
the students.

Can students use the computers in the Media Center to check email?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! This rule is well-known by all students. Anyone
discovered checking or sending email at school will be restricted from
further computer use outside of computer class and receive a demerit.

How can I get a hard copy of the AR list?

Our AR list is up to about 70 pages therefore we do not make copies for each
child.
The lists are on the Media Center web page and will download as a PDF.

I found the library books I paid for last year can I get my money back?

Chances are those books have already been replaced but our policy is to
refund half the money after the books are returned. We do not keep cash on
hand in the library so we will request a check from the front office be sent
to you.

How many books does my first grade student have to read for AR?

Each first grade teacher has the AR program set up for the students in their
class. Check their web pages for further information on this.

Also if by the end of first grade the children have learned how to log into AR
and pull up the correct test they have succeeded. I know it doesn't sound
like a lot but trying to remember all the log in information and the title of
a book. And everything has to be spelled correctly in order to even find the
right test. So be patient with your first grader. AR is just a reading
evaluation tool. IT IS BY NO MEANS OUR READING PROGRAM! We want the children
to learn to LOVE reading not DREAD IT! NO PRESSURE for first grade!!!

What are the NEW library hours?

The Media Center is open in the mornings 7:15 - 7:40 for all students. We are
also open during middle school lunch 11:30 - 12:15 for students needing to
take AR tests, finish homework or just to sit and read. We are now open from
2:45 - 3:30 Mon. - Thurs. for AR test taking, research, Criterion writing, and
home work help!

Who are the homework helpers?

The homework helpers are the 7th and 8th grade members of our National Junior
Honor Society. They are here to assist with homework or with math facts,
reading, science...whatever help the students need.

Can I come and check out AR books I want for my fisrt grader?

Yes you can but we don't recommend it. We have found over the years that
letting the students choose the book they want to read will be more
successful. There is no need to put any pressure on students at this age to
take AR tests. Please remember this is a reading enhancement program and
assessment tool. AR is NOT the reading curriculum at Trinity.

Ultimately we want our children to LOVE to read and putting pressure on them
to TAKE AR TESTS will make them HATE reading.

Each teacher handles AR in their classroom the way it works best for their
students.
