3rd grade AWC Math

November 21, 2009
Students took their test on decimals on Friday. Wow! I was so impressed
because all students achieved an A (90%-100). Students worked hard and it shows!
Now on to another subject: Multiplication. I gave students a multiplication
check-up last week. It was disappointing to see so many students who struggled
through this assessment that only covered 0-9 times facts. Students were given
this assessment back to share with you. I was proud of several students who
have mastered their multiplication facts and are working on their division facts.
Since multiplication facts are such an important skill to master, I will
now be including multiplication weekly assessments into each students grade.
Students must show improvement every week until they master this skill. I am
giving students until the end of February to achieve this goal: able to answer
50 multiplication problems (single digit 0-9)in 150 seconds. Students that
master this goal will receive 50 questions using single digit 0-12 in 150
seconds. After that mastery, students will work on division.
There are many great web sites (see my web pages). www.mathfactcafe is
great for printing pages for practice, making flashcards, and computer practice.
Please enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday week! I hope everyone has a fabulous
time with their family. I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to teach
your child math. I am so thankful that I have so many talented and caring
students.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
           Hugs!

This week our focus has been decimals. Students have been matching
decimals to fractions, putting decimals in order, and writing decimals. The
study guide for their test went home on Tuesday as homework. Students will
have a review session on Thursday. Using the study guide will help students
prepare for the test on Friday. I hope everyone has a fabulous week.

This week we have been working on decimals and place value. Students are
learning how to read numbers with decimals and to write them correctly.
Students had a quiz on Friday and will have a test on this concept next week.
Watch for the study guide to go home early next week.

Students received a practice sheet of large numbers. Students should
practice reading these numbers. They will be tested on how well they read
large numbers on Friday. Here are some numbers to practice:

Unit 4 test should have made it home by now. I attached the grade
breakdown to the test so you can see where your child falls in the class on
this test.
This week we have been working on probability. Students have been
rolling dice and tossing coins. It has been a fun time for all.
We are now working on the skills of working with large numbers and
decimals. Students will be looking at numbers in the hundred thousand range
and reading the numbers in charts. Students will also be working on place
value of decimals.
Please continue to work on your multiplication facts. It is an important
skill to master.

This week we are finishing up Unit 4. Since this was a mini unit,
students will be receiving their study guide today (Monday) for the test on
Thursday. The study guide will be homework that is due for Wednesday.
Students have done very well with perimeter and area, so I don't anticipate
many questions during the study session on Wednesday. This week we will
continue to work on multiplication and division strategies, although they
won't be a tested item on Thursday.
I hope everyone has a great week!

Last week we had 2 very successful VMath days! I was pleased with the
extra effort of many of my students. Congratulations 3rd graders on a job well
done! Our class answered over 110,000 math questions correctly in just 2 days!
Amazing!
This week we are working on fact families of multiplication and division.
Students will have a mini quiz on that skill this Tuesday. We are going to
continue to work on multiplication and division word problems. Students will
also use arrays to set up multiplication problems.
If your child is still in need of practice time to master their
multiplication facts, please see my computer web page for several great sites.
Please continue to practice this skill at home.
I hope everyone has a great week!
