Upcoming Dates
January 11, 2010 – PTO Meeting at 3:30 p.m. in the Media Center
Speakers will include:
Paula Ippolito from Citizens for Better Schools to speak to us about the upcoming vote on March 16, 2010. This is a special election that will be conducted in Sarasota County. The ballot will include a referendum to allow the Sarasota County School District to continue a 1-mill levy to support public education. The referendum is not a new tax. The referendum was originally approved in 2002 and renewed in 2006. The renewal will only authorize the district to continue the voted millage already in place.
&
Principal Joe Bazenas from Booker Middle School to speak about the Visual and Performing Arts Program at that school. The VPA Academy implements research-based instructional strategies that emphasize individual creativity and integrative skill development with arts and general education content areas. The VPA Academy is a multi-grade team of students- grades 6, 7, and 8 together- who learn in a consistent, nurturing environment during their middle school years, building camaraderie with their peers and teachers.

Hello again!
We are lucky to have a new student join us this week! Please help Alexis feel "at home" in her new school!
Additionally your children are taking the mid-year assessments right now. These are NOT for grades, only to assist me in knowing where each student's strengths and weaknesses lie so that I may plan accordingly. We completed our math assessments. I am happy to report most students were right on target! Hurrah! Ask your child what s/he received. Anything over 55% is wonderful and right where they belong!
We will finish the reading assessments sometime next week as some are on line, while others are old-fashioned paper and pencil. We will begin the on-line assessments bright and early Monday morning!
Finally, if you are a parent who has some time available at the end of next week (Thursday or Friday) I would be grateful for some assistance while we create our chocolate bars. So if you can help after lunch on either of those days, please email me so we can discuss it further. I appreciate it. I have done it in the past solo---and can again, but thought I would ask just in case! :)
Thank you for all you do to support your child's learning goals!
Mrs. T.

Dear Parents and Students,
As you hopefully are aware, it is your child's responsibility to learn the times tables facts. Parents, please assist your child in learning these important facts! We are testing for the knowledge of these facts each week. I have been grading them according to the percentage completed that are correct, but soon I will change that to reflect their knowledge of the total 100 on each test.
Thank you,
Mrs. T.

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone has enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, their holidays with their friends and family members.
Unfortunately due to the dreaded Flu, I had to cancel my Christmas Celebration with my family but have rescheduled it for this Friday, January the first day of 2010! I am beginning to feel better so I am looking forward to seeing my own son and my sister for our belated celebration.
I have posted the spelling & vocabulary words for next week for those who desire a head start.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone's Chocolate Projects! Remember the due date is coming up!
Hello again!
A huge hug and many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Friedman for their wonderful presentation yesterday. The students enjoyed learning about another culture;as well as eating the wonderful foods! Yummy! Chelsea did a wonderful job singing to us too!
I have updated the spelling words site and quizlet with this week's words to study. There are links to each on our sightseeing page.
Thought you might want to know. I did catch my typo (Thanks Nolan!) on the definition of machete. "Think" should be "thick"--as in thick, clumsy fingers of mine!
Additionally, the chocolate project has been sent home with each student. There will be additional copies on the document page in case you misplace yours. Enjoy the project! We are learning lots of different skills!
Fondly,
Mrs. T.

Dear Families.
We are fast approaching the winter holiday break. Each student's excitement will increase each day until the holiday comes! The school is fairly vibrating now!Oh how I remember when I couldn't wait until Santa arrived too! What a fun time of life!
Mr. and Mrs. Friedman (Chelsea's grandparents) are coming to school Monday to teach us about Hanukkah. The program will include the history and some special foods. I think it will be great fun to learn about this holiday.
Thank you for working with your child on his/her multiplication/division facts. We have learned about the concept of repeated addition/subtraction, multiplication and division fact families and colored in our charts to the facts we know. Hopefully with your assistance, the automaticity (quick recall) of these facts will come with practice. I have sent home the worksheets for these facts that we will not be using on class. They do not have to be returned to school (stapled worksheets chpt. 9-14). Simply use as you see fit to review, practice or test your child. After the FCAT we will be digging deeper into this skill, getting ready for fourth grade, but we have many more concepts to teach before the test in March.
This week's reading is also expostitory nonfiction and we are working on graphing in math. Mean, median and mode are difficult conceopts at this age, but we will forge ahead hopefully finding the way to manuver through these skills!
Our classroom novel, the original "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", is a big hit! Currently we are comparing the original edition to the current edition. It is also a reading counts book for eight points! Each student will test on it when we are done.
Thanks again for all you do to support your child's learning goals.
Mrs. T.

Happy Thanksgiving Holiday to all my families,
As a result of the shortened week and classmate absences, we will use this week to review math skills already taught and not begin a new story in our reading books. We will be reading about Thanksgiving and writing along that theme. In Social Studies we will begin our webquest for information about the cacao bean!
I sincerely wish everyone a wonderful time with their families during this holiday. We have much to be thankful for in our lives.
Mrs. T.

Hello,
At the end of today, we were informed that people without tickets to tomorrow's fine feast can still come!
So if you were unable to send in your money, don't worry just join us anyway!
To those who did do as the fliers requested, we were given your tickets this morning. I have them, and will pass them to your child as we exit our classroom on the way to the feast! This way, I am sure you will have your tickets with nothing lost!
Additionally, we are almost halfway through our second grading period. Another way of thinking, about where we are in terms of the school year, is that we are almost done with the first half!
Many male students are finding it extremely difficult to behave in a third grade manner lately.
My expectations are:
1) Entering the classroom prepared and ready for the day's lessons.
2) Listening (aka: not talking) while I am teaching, and raising the hand for permission to speak (aka: not interrupting a speaker, be it myself or another student).
3) Arguing with an adult is not an acceptable behavior.
4) Respect for the learning of other student in the classroom and in the school. Unacceptable behavior adversely affects the learning of students who do desire to learn.
Your child should be very familiar with these expectations. I have had the same ones since school began this year. Additionally, these are the same behaviors expected to be learned in Kindergarten, practiced in First and Second Grades.
We have far too much to learn to waste time playing and taking away from other children's learning. Each minute I spend in the class redirecting misbehaving children, is one minute less that I have to teach those who truly desire to learn and grow.
I believe that you, as parents, also have these same expectations for your child's behavior in my classroom. Please remind your child of the consequences he/she may face from you for behavior that is unacceptable.
I thank you for your assistance in this matter. Please check your child's agenda on a daily basis to see what the day's behavior was like for them.
Mrs. T.

Hello Everyone,
I just received a voice mail from one of my beloved students asking about Specials tomorrow. We had discussed our day’s schedule for tomorrow, but I did not specifically address this issue. Since it is too late at night to make a return call, and since others might also wonder about this, I thought an e-mail to all might be of help.
We will not have Specials tomorrow. The rotation is the same- we just will not participate tomorrow as we will be at the Van Wezel during that time.
Our day:
8:20- 1st Bell – entry begin Morning Work
8:45- check Morning Work
9:00- go to the buses, load up
9:15- depart Tatum for the performance of “Stella Luna”—with every student on their best behavior!
11:45-return to Tatum (take our Spelling test and pretest)
12:15-Lunch
12:50-1:10 Recess
1:10-3:00- Assessments (T3W11-“Loved Best” and Chapter 7 time)
3:15 Begin the weekend!
I hope this helps!
Mrs. T.
(copy of e-mail sent--in case this is read first!)

Tonight is Math Night! Hope to see you there!
Friday, November 13th Field Trip to Van Wazel. Please make sure your children are dressed for this special occassion!

PLEASE allow your children to tell you the time when they ask! We have been working hard on this skill and they certainly need to utilize it themselves!

Dear Parents,
As you know we are working on our math skills, "All About Money"! We are learning to count it, (using the least amount of coins, the most amount of coins), add amounts, make change, and estimate amounts needed to purchase items.
A laminated "Menu" will be coming home with your child on Monday, along with some "guest checks". They will work with the menu, just as we have done several times in the classroom, to create a list of items to total. Once they have totaled their "check", they will need to write down the bills and coins needed to complete their "purchase"!
You could be of great assistance with their acquisition of these skills. If you could allow your child to count back change when out for dinners, or at the store, it would have great impact on their learning. If you wanted to be the diner, and give an order to your child that would be helpful too. Or you could empty your pockets allowing your child to count the coins. Another way you could be helpful, is to allow your child to see a receipt, and have them count back the change.
Handling money is an important skill as I am sure you agree. We also use our checkbooks in class to store our "Eagle Bucks", to support the school-wide positive behavior plan. Some students have over $200.00 in their account! Way to go! Doing these things has allowed us to learn about how money circulates as our Eagle Bucks are returned to the "Bank of Mrs. T." and sometimes they even receive a bill they turned in! We have also completed deposit slips every Friday, and some have even written their first check!
Thank you for all you do to support your child's learning.
Mrs. T.
PS) I have also attached a file for both sets of menus and guest check on the Passport Document page of this website. Just in case you'd like more options!
Also talking about money brings the economy to my mind, I know that many families are struggling right now. You may even know someone who is having a great deal of difficulty. I have been told that if someone dials 211, it will connect to a clearinghouse that will give advice.
My understanding is that they will help a person discover what agency to turn to that can actually be of assistance. I thought I would pass that information on to you.

Tomorrow night is the "Fall Ya'll" carnival.
The PTO still has need for volunters and donations. Please feel free to use the PTO link on the "sightseeing" page to contact PTO!
I am manning the "Post Office", as all of the school's children have written notes to their parents. Be sure to retrieve your note!
I hope many of you are looking forward to having some great fun with your children.
Be sure to save the date of Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 7:00 pm - 8:00! It's Family Math night! Every 15 minutes you will rotate to another classroom and be giving the tools to have great fun with math and your child!
See you then!
Mrs. T.

Dear Parents and Students,
Please make sure you
check the current spelling and vocabulary word lists prior to studying them on-line. Each child receives the new list every Friday after the preassessment, it is posted on the "
Railway Station" every Saturday morning and we work with them throughout the school week. Yet, some students have reported that they have studied the wrong week's list!
So
please use the tools carefully!
Thank you,
Mrs. T.

Hello Parents of Mrs. T.’s Classroom-
Your PTO needs assistance with the “It’s Fall Y’all” Carnival.
The carnival is on Friday, October 23rd from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m.
The shifts are generally for 30 minutes which would allow you to be able to enjoy the carnival with your child and help too! Mrs. T. is manning her own booth for the entire time, but there are many things you could do to offer assistance to the PTO.
Please be sure to return the Entertainment Books if you are choosing not to purchase them!
The PTO is still missing many of the books. Those are not free books. The parents and the school are responsible for the cost of those books should they not be returned. Parents will receive a notice of monies owed. If you are choosing to keep it, please send in a check made payable to "Tatum Ridge Elementary PTO" for $30.00. If you do not plan to pay for one, it is necessary that the book be returned to the teacher or the front office. Be sure to include the name of the student so that you are credited with returning it!
Thank you so much for everything that you do for the PTO and for Tatum Ridge Elementary!
Mrs. T.
Your PTO Liaison and Teacher

A quick reminder that our class checks homework at 9:00 am everyday following its assignment! That means we check it on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday Mornings!
Additionally, we check our spelling words together every Friday so that each student can see their errors immediately, and I collect them and the reading tests for my weekend homework. I grade and return these each Monday.
I make every attempt to return math tests the following day.

We do need all field trip permission slips returned as soon as possible! The Van Wezel people will assign all schools seats according to the date of their return.
Of course, we'd like to have nice seats for the performance of "Stellaluna"! So please send them back as soon as possible!

HUGE Thanks to the wonderful parents who are sending in things for our classroom's "Cooking" Basket for the silent auction!
I am also on the auction block again with a fun filled Saturday afternoon at the putt-putt golf course--and pizza lunch. I look forward to having as much fun with a Tatum Student this year as I have the past three years! Sadly I often lose the games, but come out a winner anyway!
I am very appreciative of your generosity---and so is the PTO!
Reminder:
PTO Meeting with the Mad Scientist September 14th at 6:15 p.m.
The Mad Scientist is coming to Tatum Ridge!
Let your children have a wonderful time learning science with the Mad Scientist in the Cafeteria as you attend the PTO meeting in the Media Center!
I hope to see you there!
*******************************************************
A big "Welcome to Our Class" for Brooke, our newest student! We look forward to learning with her this year!
*******************************************************
A gentle reminder from Mrs. T., Please make sure your child eats a breakfast before coming to school. "Anything is better then nothing!" surely applies in this case. A banana, (slice of toast, breakfast bar, or dry cereal) eaten in the car on the way to school works far better then nothing on those mornings when time is tight!
Several students have complained of being hungry during the first 15 minutes of class. It is extremely difficult for someone to concentrate on learning when the tummy is rumbling! We do have snack at 10 am every morning. I have been supplying a snack for those students who have forgotten to bring one; yet I am sure they would enjoy something from home far more than what I have to offer!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
September 17th, 7-8 p.m. is your parent information night! Remember to leave your children at home so that you can learn about how to assist your child's learning!
A P.T.O. reminder--Monday, September 14, 6-7 pm, The Mad Scientist will be here to educate and keep your children busy while you attend the next P.T.O. meeting!
Our Class is responsible for a "Cooking Basket". Anything--cookbooks, measuring cups, measuring spoons, hot pads etc..., you can send in to complete this basket would be very appreciated!
*********************************************************
You can go to this site, http://www.myteacherweb.com/Signup.aspx , it will notify you about all updates to my web pages. It is free to parents and family members. I hope you find this to be of use to you!

A Traveler Newsletter went home today. I hope you all received it! I have added it to our "Passport Documents" page. If you have trouble downloading publisher files, please let me know and I will scan them into the computer. Then I can upload them in a .pdf format.
I should have sent home a page for all car riders to place in the passenger side window. We are hoping that having such information easily accessable will make the pick-up line run smoother. The page will come home tomorrow.
Additionally, I have added all emails I have received to this newsflash! Hopefully it will save you some time and aggrevation.
Enjoy the night!
