Reading: Target Skill - Setting

  • Identify and describe the setting of the story
  • Review comparing and contrasting - Comparing is finding how things are alike. Contrasting is finding how things are different.
  • Genre Study - Understand characteristics of folktales
  • Use a graphic organizer as a comprehension strategy
  • Read every night for 15 minutes. Reading practice helps increase fluency and comprehension. First grade goal is to be reading 60 words per minute by the end of first grade.

Practice the following words

  • High-Frequency Words - came - could - gold - happy - made - night - saw - were - people - eye
  • Robust Vocabulary - consequences - cruel - greedy - handsomely- regret - reward
  • Spelling Words - up - but - set - man - them - need - block - stomp - going - upset - come - there
  • Sentence Dictation - His friend can go with us. We need to get that rock.

Phonics

  • Review Contractions
  • Review the floss rule - When a one-syllable root word has a short vowel sound followed by the sound /f/, /l/, or /s/ those sounds are usually spelled ff, ll, or ss. We call words that follow this rule "floss words.
  • Introduce final stable syllables ble, fle, ple, dle, tle, gle, cle, kle, zle
  • Review final k spelling rules

Math

  • Tell time to the hour on a clock
  • Add 2 to an even number
  • Add 2 to an odd number
  • Sorting, counting and recording pattern blocks used to make a design
  • Addition and subtraction word problems
  • Use math tiles to increase math skills

Writing

  • Introduce writing a Friendly Letter
  • Write an Acrostic Poem
  • Practice writing a story with a beginning, middle (three details) and a closing.

Social Studies

Reminders

  • Our Thanksgiving Festival was a great success. Thanks to all who help and donated items needed. Your help was greatly appreciated. The children enjoyed the day!!
  • Nov. 23-27 - Thanksgiving Holidays - No School all week.
  • Dec. 4th - Field Trip to Martin Theater to see the play "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" and Under the Oaks Park for lunch. Please be sure to return the field trip slip and the $5.75 to cover the cost by Wednesday, Dec. 2nd. No child will be permitted to go without signed permission.
  • Dec. 7th - 10th - Santa Shop
  • Dec. 10th - Christmas Dinner in the lunchroom. Please join your child for lunch on this day. We eat at 10:45 - 11:15.
