State Standards.

A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59%
Formative Assessment
This type of assessment is for practice only. It will not be averaged
for the report card grade.
-
Daily work-Center work, computer assignment (Successmaker, Accelerated
Reader), math pratctice, etc.
-
Homework-Math homework is sent home Monday thru Thursday. Spelling words
should be practiced nightly.
Summative Assessment
This type of assessment is the total or "sum" that measures what your child
has learned. A numeric and letter grade will be assigned to the work and goes
in the grade book following several opportunities for the student to practice
the skill.
-
Pencil and paper test. (usually given on Friday)
-
Performance task-the student will be asked to perform a skill such as properly
measuring liquids.
-
Presentation-the student presents material he or she has learned in the form
of book talks, reports, etc.
-
Rubrics-the student is assessed on a number scale according to his or her
achievement.
You will be receiving spelling tests and reading test with scores on them.
First, let me say that spelling counts for a very minor portion of the writing
grade. Please think of it as being about 10% of the writing grade. Next, the
reading tests are...oddly formatted. Because they are broken up in individual
skill sets (focus skill, vocabulary, comprehension, phonics, etc...) the
individual scores for each section may appear low. For instance, there are
only 4 questions on the "locate information" section. If you child missed 1
problem, that makes a score of 75 for that individual test section. I record
these grades broken down into sections and will look at the overall trend
towards progress. The actual test scores aren't as valuable as the trends
established by them (indicating progress or lack of progress towards goals.)
Last, the new textbook series is taking a bit of time for us to adjust to so
if you have any confusion, please don't feel alone in the regard. We"re still
working on how to best record and indicate student progress.
