We will have our first spelling test on Friday, Sept. 11th. The words are
chosen from the 2nd grade reading book and frequently misspelled words during
class. The students will have spelling homework every school day except
Friday. We will start with 10 words and a dictation sentence. The
The students will continue to do a math worksheet nightly for homework.

Reading and Writing

One of my goals for the year is to help your children grow as independent
readers and writers and to develop a love for books and reading that will
last a lifetime!

There will be several reading formats in our classroom. Our reading block
will include Guided Reading, Reading Workshop and Read alouds. Our focus in
the early months will be on what kinds of strategies can we use to become
better readers. As the year progresses, our focus will be on increasing
fluency and meaning in the texts we read. The students will learn how to
think and talk about books and share what they read.

We will use a variety of whole class, partner and small group formats during
our guided reading block. The purpose of guided reading is to expose
children to a wide range of literature, teach comprehension and teach
children how to read with books that become increasingly harder.

The goals will be:

* to teach comprehension skills and strategies
* to develop background knowledge, vocabulary and oral language
* to teach children how to read all kinds of literature
* to provide instructional-level reading
* to foster a love of reading
