Announcements

Greetings, everyone. Sorry for the delay in updating! What a busy time for
all of us!

We have been so productive in class, completing an interesting mini-unit on
natural events, including volcanoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes. We
researched various events in groups and made a mini-book. We have begun
reading some novels. We took tests on RC disaster books. We will be
studying geography and geographical terms for the next few weeks. Map skills
will be incorporated along with graphing skills.

For the Thanksgiving and holiday season, we have been discussing peace. We
had a socratic seminar about what peace is, wrote wonderful writing pieces on
creating peace. The children have such kind and good hearts! It really
comes through in these discussions.

We are beginning a plant unit for science. Many of our reading activities
will involve books about plants and responding to these different types of
text. We have some really fun activities and crafts planned. We will be
doing crafts including leaf rubbings, leaf prints, and nature collages during
the unit. We will also connect math with measurement of plants we grow in
class, measuring the mass of different seeds and more. Graphing skills will
again come into play with our plant growth charts. We will measure, record
and graph the growth of our various plants to compare. The children are also
reading their selection in the Storytown book.

In math, we are concluding our time chapter with a test on Monday. Data
analysis including mean, median, mode and range, will be included in our next
unit. We will be learning more about types of graphs including bar graphs,
double bar graphs, line plots, line graphs, pie graphs, etc. Please help
your child with these concepts. Mean is the average. Median is the middle
score in a set of data once the scores are arranged from least to greatest.
Mode is the score that occurs the most. Range is the difference between the
smallest and largest number. (Subtract.) Using charts and graphs is a
tremendous life skill that creates an ability to use information and make
meaning from numerical representations.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the feast. It was a very pleasant
occasion.

Please take note of the news flash as we are collecting some items for our
plant unit. THANK YOU!
