Writing Criteria

WEEK 1:

no fragments (Hacker G5)

no "run-on" sentences (Hacker G6)

adhere to all capitalization rules (Hacker M3)

no cliches or hackneyed phrases (Hacker W5-e)

no contractions in formal writing

WEEK   2:

subject and verb must agree (Hacker G1)

do not end a clause with a preposition (Hacker B1-f; B3-a)

use consistent verb tenses (no verb tense shifts) (Hacker S4-b)

do not use the words "it" or "itself"

do not use the word "very" or any other unnecessary intensifier

WEEK 3:

do not use "thing" or any of its cousins such as everything, nothing, anything

do not use "start to" or "begin to"

know and apply all apostrophe rules (Hacker P5)

do not begin a clause with "however"

WEEK   4:

no dangling modifiers (participles) (Hacker S3-e)

know and apply all comma rules; especially avoid comma splices (Hacker P1)

know and apply all rules about the ellipsis, dash, hyphen, colon (Hacker P7)

WEEK  5:

no split infinitives (Hacker S3-d)

do not use passive voice; use active voice (Hacker W3-a)

know and apply all pronoun rules (Hacker G3)

WEEK   6:

use parallel structure (Hacker S1)

no "padding" (R for W, p. 66)

do not use "a lot"
