Well, many groups did not finish reading Scorpions before the break so we
will finish up during the first week back, probably Monday or Tuesday. When
we return students will begin working on their Scorpions collage group
project. Students have the information that they need to begin collecting
the pieces for their project during the break. Please refer to the rubric
for requirements and grading. This project will show their understanding of
the book and the thematic elements involved.
Students are due to have read 600 pages in class on their own by the end of
the quarter. Many students are well on their way but a number are behind.
I have not told them that they will recieve 100 pages for reading Scorpions
with us in class. It will remain a secret (unless you are reading this)until
they return from break. My hope is that they will continue to read during the
break, getting closer to their 600 page goal. After they reach 1200 pages,
they qualify for bonus grades for their reading activity. We have been
reading our personal choices during class time, however, this week we will be
finishing our group reading which will cut into our silent reading time.
Reading can and should also be done at home. Students have their books
checked out from the VHS Library, my classroom library (I have recently added
over 100 books to my library due to a grant awarded to me several months ago)
or may bring in books from home.
After the break, we will be focusing on reading Of Mice and Men together in
our small groups. I have the audio recording so we will listen to it
together and then write about and discuss the story with our groups. The
reading requirement will be to read a biography and turn in a timeline for
the person's life, making a presentation to the class. The project require-
ments will be passed out the second week after break.
I wish that you all will have a Merry Christmas and a terrific New Year in
2010. See you next year.
