Announcements for English 1/Intensive Reading/Applied Comm. small medium large The Last Call for Book Projects are due on Monday, December 7th. Instructions and grading rubric are available in the handouts section. Plot Diagrams must accompany the project. Most of the rest of the week will be taken up with reading "Scorpions" by Walter Dean Myers in small reading groups. Students will read out loud and then write out the information needed on their job sheets where they are either the Clarifier, the Visualizer, the Summarizer, the Questioner or the Predictor. Following the writing, the students discuss their information with the other group members. The discussion is the most key piece, so I am being particularly attentive to that during this process. Students are due to have read 600 pages in class on their own by the end of the quarter. Many students are well on their way but most are behind. After they reach 1200 pages, they qualify for bonus grades for their reading activity. Many students are doing a great job on their reading. Keep up the good work. We still read for 25 minutes a day in class. We will continue this during this week, having to back off a bit while we were working on reciprocal teaching introduction. Reading can and should also be done at home. Students have their books checked out from the VHS Library, my classroom library (I have recently added over 100 books to my library due to a grant awarded to me several months ago) or can bring in books from home.
