OBJ:  To identify the main idea of each chapter in our story.
CW:  Completed "One Minute Writes" exercise.  Began our new story for Lesson 5, "Show Time" which is a Reader's Theater.  Completed Day 1 of Center Activities for Lesson 5.  Week 14 Reading Logs were handed out today.
HW:  Read for 100 minutes at least 3 days this week.

OBJ:  To finish Lesson 4 Center Activities
CW:  Today students finished any activities they needed to before taking the Lesson 4 quiz tomorrow.  HW:  Finish Lesson 4 Center Activities (these are green folders with green checklists.)  Week 13 Reading Logs are due tomorrow. 

FRIDAY 11/20/09
OBJ:  To write a journal entry about student choice books.
CW:  After using a rubric to check Literacy Letter #2, students wrote a journal entry about their choice books.  Paragraph 1 contained a summary of the choice book and paragraph 2 contained an extended write -up of one of the 7 literacy responses (found on the back of the reading logs).
HW:  No HW.  Have a wonderful weekend!

CW:  Today students worked on Literacy Letter #2.  When finished, they were given a rubric for checking their work as well as their peer's work.  Students also completed center activities.

OBJ:  To read and appreciate current fiction
CW:  Students read chapters of Schooled and completed accompanying activities.

CW:  Students read chapters of Schooled and completed accompanying activities.  Week 13 Reading Logs were handed out today.

FRIDAY 11/13/09
OBJ:  To use writing skills to complete Literacy Letter #2.
CW:  Today students wrote paragraphs 2 & 3 of our second Literacy Letter.  In paragraph 2, they chose one of the sayings from the story, Schooled, and wrote whether they agreed or disagreed and why.  Paragraph 3 included a rating of the book from 1-10 and an explanation of why they chose that score. 
HW:  Eat good food.  Have a wonderful weekend!

OBJ:  To read and appreciate current fiction.
CW:  Today students read several chapters of Schooled and completed accompanying activities.  Students also completed an assignment identifying and writing compound sentences.
HW:  Read 100 minutes per week at least 3 days per week.

OBJ:  To summarize the information from our story into a paragraph.
CW:  For Literacy Letter #2, students brainstormed the information we've learned from our story, Schooled, so far, then selected the main ideas and summarized them in a paragraph.
HW:  Finish summary paragraph 1 of Literacy Letter #2.

TUESDAY 11/10/09
OBJ:  To read and appreciate current fiction.
CW:  Week 11 Reading Logs were collected today and Week 12 Logs (yellow) were handed out.  Students complete an activity identifying and writing compound sentences.  Then they read several chapters of Schooled and completed accompanying activities.
HW:  Read 100 minutes per week at least 3 days per week.

CW:  Today we read several chapters of Schooled and completed accompanying activities.  Students also worked on an activity identifying and writing compound sentences.

OBJ:  To use the planning tool to complete the FCAT Writing Prompt.
CW:  Today students used the planning tool we prepared yesterday to complete the FCAT Writing Prompt for November.  They then watched a video on the life of Wilma Rudolph, the subject of our current story.

THURSDAY 11/5/09
OBJ:  To use planning tool to prepare for FCAT Writing Practice.
CW:  Today students prepared for our next FCAT Writing Practice by learning to use a planning tool where they identified a focus statement, main ideas, supporting examples and a conclusion for a given prompt.
HW:  Read 100 minutes this week.  Bring in Panther Run Pledge Forms tomorrow.

CW:  Read chapters of Schooled and completed accompanying activities.  Students also completed center activities.

CW:  Read chapters of Schooled.  Week 10 Reading Logs were turned in and Week 11 Reading Logs were handed out today.  Students also completed center activities focusing on this week's vocabulary words. 
HW:  Read for 100 minutes in at least 3 days per week.

THURSDAY 10/29/09
OBJ:  To read and appreciate current fiction.  To prepare for our visit to House of Poe.
CW:  First, we read Ch 7 in Schooled.  Then students viewed an animated version of Edgar Allan Poe's "Telltale Heart" and the 1960 movie trailer of "House of Usher" in preparation to our visit today to the House of Poe presented by the Gnu team.
HW:  Read!  Brush your teeth!  Have a spooktacular weekend! 

WEDNESDAY 10/28/09
OBJ:  To identify traits in the main character of our story that you relate to.
CW:  First, students tallied their 1st quarter reading logs to determine who made their reading goals.  Those who did and turned in every reading log (without significant delays) will be invited to attend our "First Annual Reading Ice Cream Party" during lunch tomorrow.  After that, students worked on identifying 3 ways in which they could relate to the main character in our story.  They then wrote about this in our 2nd paragraph of the literacy letter.
HW:  Finish paragraph 2 of the literacy letter.  

TUESDAY 10/27/09
OBJ:  To read and appreciate current fiction.
CW:  Today students turned in Week 9 Reading Logs.  Tomorrow we will calculate 1st quarter totals and determine who has reached their reading goals.  Those who have will be treated to an Ice Cream Party at lunchtime on Thursday.  We also read Ch 6 in Schooled and completed accompanying activities.  Students also completed center activities.
HW:  Read and record in Week 10 Reading Log. 

WEEK 10
MONDAY 10/26/09
OBJ:  To summarize Ch's 1-5 in Schooled as the first paragraph in our first literacy letter.
CW:  Today we read Ch 5 in Schooled then, using guiding questions, summarize the first 5 chapters.  This will be the first of 3 paragraphs students will write in a literacy letter.
HW:  Read for 25 minutes and record in Reading Log.  Week 9 Reading Logs are due tomorrow.  Students who have reached their reading goals set earlier in the semester will be invited to an Ice Cream Party at lunchtime on Thursday!  YUM!!   

FRIDAY 10/23/09
OBJ:  To complete assessment on this week's stories and focus skills.  To read and appreciate current fiction.  
CW:  Today students completed assessments after finishing all their work from centers.  After that,  we read Ch's 3 & 4 in Schooled.  Students identified characteristics of each main character and continued our storyboard summary of each chapter.
HW:  Mow the lawn (if you're allowed)!  Read for 25 minutes and record in Reading Log.  Have a fabulous weekend! 

THURSDAY 10/22/09
BOOK FAIR!!  After returning from the Book Fair, students completed their center activities from this week.  Quiz over this week's story and activities tomorrow.
HW:  Read for 25 minutes & record in Reading Log.

WEDNESDAY 10/21/09
OBJ:  To summarize a familiar story to prepare for writing literacy letters.
CW:  Today we finished the activity started yesterday.  We also read Ch 2 in Schooled.  Students learned about a Foucault pendulum and sitar music which were both elements of our story. 
HW:  Finish Cinderella summary (1 paragraph).  Read 20 minutes. 
REMINDER:  Dolphin Team day to attend the Book Fair is Thursday, October 22nd.  Bring money if you want to buy books.

TUESDAY 10/20/09
OBJ:  To summarize a familiar story to prepare for writing literacy letters.
CW:  Today students went to the Media Center for a lesson on summarizing presented by our Media Specialist, Mrs. Robson.  This is in preparation for writing literacy letters about student choice books as part of our Starbooks activities.  Week 9 Reading Logs were also given out.
HW:  Read 25 minutes and record in Reading Log.
REMINDER:  Dolphin Team day to attend the Book Fair is Thursday, October 22nd.  Bring money if you want to buy books. 

WEEK 9
MONDAY 10/19/09
OBJ:  To read and appreciate realistic fiction.
CW:  Today students received their own copy of our Starbooks book, Schooled, by Gordon Korman.  We will be reading this book together over the course of the next 2 months which will end with a visit from the author himself in December!  Students were also introduced to accompanying activities. 
HW:  Read for 25 minutes.  Week 8 Reading Logs (purple) are due tomorrow. 

FRIDAY 10/16/09
CW:  Today students received information about the SMS Food Drive that is taking place from October 19-29.  Students are asked to bring in at least 1 can good if they can.  The school is having a contest between teams.  The team that brings in the most cans will receive a donut party courtesy of PTSO. 
HW:  Read for 25 minutes and pick up 10 pieces of trash.  Have a great weekend!

THURSDAY 10/15/09
OBJ:  Write compound predicates.  Identify and place events in chronological order.  Compare information from the book and video about the Wright Brothers.
CW:  Students received a purple pamphlet that describes the Starbooks book, "Schooled", that we will begin reading on Monday.  Students need to get the pamphlet signed by a parent and returned to receive their free book.  Students were also given information about next week's Book Fair.  The Dolphin Team will have the opportunity to attend on Thursday, October 22nd.  Students may bring money to buy books, etc. from the Book Fair.  Parents are invited to attend on Tuesday, October 20th.  A flyer was also sent home today with that information. 
HW:  Return purple Starbooks pamphlet.


WEDNESDAY 10/14/09
OBJ:  Identify and write compound predicates.  Compare information from the book and video about the Wright Brothers.
CW:  After completing an exercise on identifying and rewriting compound predicates, students then viewed a video on the Wright Brothers.  After, they found similarities and differences between the story in our book and the video.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Record in Reading Log.

TUESDAY 10/13/09
CW:  Today students completed one more center then read stories from Junior Scholastic Magazine.  Week 7 Reading Logs were collected today.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.

WEEK 8
MONDAY 10/12/09
OBJ:  To identify compound subjects & predicates and complete supporting activities in the technology, writing, word study and guided reading centers.
CW:  After completing a group activity identifying compound subjects & predicates, students participated in supporting activities in centers.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Week 7 (pink) Reading Logs are due tomorrow.

OBJ:  To review vocabulary, identify compound subjects & predicates, appreciate a biography, and identify the events of a story told in chronological order.
CW:   Today we finished reading our story about the Wright Brothers, summarized important events that took place in the story, then completed related activities in centers.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Clean your room!   

THURSDAY 10/8/09
OBJ:  To review vocabulary, identify compound subjects & predicates, appreciate a biography, and identify the events of a story told in chronological order.
CW:  Today we continued reading our story about the Wright Brothers, summarized important events that took place in the story, and completed an exercise identifying compound subjects & predicates.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Record in Reading Log.    

WEDNESDAY 10/7/09
OBJ:  To learn important vocabulary, appreciate a biography, and identify the events of a story told in chronological order.
CW:  After finishing FAIR Testing, we began reading our next story, "The Wright Brothers".  
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Record in Reading Log.     

TUESDAY 10/6/09
OBJ:  To learn important vocabulary, appreciate a biography, and identify the events of a story told in chronological order.
CW:  Today students finished any work and assessments from Lesson 2.  Students were introduced to our new story, "The Wright Brothers".  New vocabulary terms are available on www.quizlet.com.  Search under the name of the story, "The Wright Brothers", for terms.  New reading logs were also handed out today.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Record in Reading Log.       

WEEK 7
MONDAY 10/5/09
OBJ:  To complete work for Lesson 2: "The Color of My Words" including center activities and on-line activities.
CW:  Today we sent to the computer lab to complete the assignments for our story, "The Color of My Words."
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and record in Reading Log.  Week 6 (yellow) Reading Logs are due tomorrow.

FRIDAY 10/2/09
OBJ:  Set a reading goal for the remainder of the first quarter.
CW:  Today students used their reading logs to calculate the number of minutes they've read so far then set a reading goal for themselves for the rest of the first quarter.  They were also introduced to an online site, www.quizlet.com.  They can search under the title of each story we are reading to play games that review their vocabulary words.  This story's words can be found under "The Color of My Words".
HW:  Read for 20 min & hug a tree!

THURSDAY 10/1/09
OBJ:  Become familiar with new books available in the Media Center.
CW:  Today students went to the Media Center and participated in an activity led by Mrs. Robson called a "Book Pass".  They became familiar with books that were purchased for SMS through the StarBooks Grant and will be available for check-out for 6th graders only beginning Monday.  Students also continued working in centers when they returned. 
HW:  Read for 20 min & record in Reading Log

Florida Assessment In Reading (FAIR) Testing today.

WEEK 6
MONDAY 9/28/09
OBJ:  Identify plot & setting in a historical fiction story.  Identify and create simple and complete subjects & predicates within sentences. 
CW:  After finishing reading together the story, "The Color of My Words",  students worked in centers on either guided reading, computer assignments connected with our story, writing to identify the elements of our story, or working on subjects & predicates and robust vocabulary.  Tomorrow students will be going to the computer lab for Florida Assessment in Reading (FAIR) testing - formerly SRI testing.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and complete Reading Log.  Week 5 Reading Logs are due tomorrow.

FRIDAY 9/25/09
OBJ:  Identify and create simple and complete subjects & predicates within sentences. 
CW:  Today students completed the worksheet which helped them to identify both the complete and simple subjects or predicates within sentences.  They then created their own sentences and identifies the simple subjects or predicates within those sentences.  We continued reading "The Color of My Words" and even learned a little merengue dance that had been discussed in our story.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and record in Reading Log.  Tell someone special that you love them!
 
THURSDAY 9/24/09
OBJ:  Identify plot & setting in a historical fiction story.  Correct grammar within sentences.  Identify simple and complete subjects & predicates within a sentence.
CW:  After DOL, and continuing to read our story, "The Color of my Words," students received progress reports today.  They need to get the cover sheet signed and returned to their 1st period teacher.
HW:  Get progress report signed & return to 1st period teacher.  Read for 20 minutes and record in Reading Log.

WEDNESDAY 9/23/09
OBJ:  Correct grammar within sentences.  To understand important vocabulary within a story.
 CW:  Today students completed Daily Oral Language (DOL) exercised by correcting grammar within sentences.  They also learned the meanings of the robust vocabulary words within our story, "The Color of my Words" (see Monday for list of words).
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Complete vocabulary definitions.  

TUESDAY 9/22/09
OBJ:  Make connections with literature.  Choose appropriate chapter books.
CW: Today students turned in Week 4 Reading Logs (green) and received Week 5 Reading Logs (purple).  On the back of the reading logs are 7 responses to literature, 4 symbols and 3 connections.  For every entry in their reading log, students are to make at least one connection using a literary response. That response needs to be placed in the appropriate box on the reading log.  After discussing the appropriate way to choice a book that is at the student's appropriate reading leve, we made a trip to the Media Center where students carefully chose chapter books that are at their reading level.  Their choice books should be chapter books that we will use for further in-class assignments.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes, record in Week 5 Reading Log, and include at least 1 literary response per reading.   

WEEK 5
MONDAY 9/21/09
OBJ:  Introduce and understand vocabulary.  Learn to correctly spell words with long vowel sounds and vowel digraphs. 
CW:  Today students took the Week 5 spelling pretest.  This week's words are:  sneeze, arcade, vacuum, breathe, belief, proclaim, entertain, quaint, aglow, saying, essay, tomorrow, coffee, stride, easel, approach, globe, polite, duty, & grief.  Challenge words:  acclaim, lagoon, caffeine, receipt,  & yield.  Students were also introduced to the robust vocubulary for our new story.  Those words are:  meandering, emerged, survey, frolicked, hovered, tormented, inquire, & subtle. After reading a short passage, students used context clues to identify the meanings of these words.  
HW:  Read for 20 minutes.  Week 4 Reading Logs are due tomorrow.
 
FRIDAY 9/18/09
OBJ: Successfully complete Lesson 1 spelling test and Lesson 1 quiz.
CW:  Today students took their first spelling test then took the quiz over our story, "Maxx Comedy".
HW:  Read for 20 minutes & hug your folks!   

Friday, September 18, 2009 THURSDAY 9/17/09
OBJ:  Identify story elements. Identify and use words with short vowel sounds.  Compare similarities and differences between stories.
CW:  Today students continued working on selected readings and identifying elements of the story.  They also continued working in centers to complete the work started yesterday.  They will have a quiz over story elements tomorrow.  Students brought home the spelling pages to use to study for tomorrow's spelling test.  Spelling words to study:  absences, against, album, circuit, bronze, chess, biscuit, depth, cabinet, drenched, glimpse, nozzle, feather, plastic, publish, pulse, rapid, snack, solve, system 
HW:  Study for tomorrow's spelling test.  Read for 20 minutes and record in Reading Log.

WEDNESDAY 9/16/09
OBJ: Identify and use words with short vowel sounds.  Continue objectives from Tuesday.
CW:  Today students continued working in the technology, writing and word study centers along with participating in guided reading groups. 
HW:  Study for Friday's spelling test.  Read for 20 minutes and record in Reading Log.

TUESDAY 9/15/09
NOTICE:  Website problems have been fixed.  Sorry for the delay in updates.
OBJ:  Identify story elements.  Explain the meaning of idioms from our story.  Respond to their choice book selection in a journal writing.
CW:  Today we finished our text story, "Maxx Comedy" and identified the final elements in the story.  During centers, most students had the opportunity to begin selected assignments using our classroom computers.  Students can access these same assignments at home by going to www.thinkcentral.com and using their student number and pin number to login. Students also received a new Reading Log for week 4 (green). 
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and complete Reading Log. 

WEEK 4
MONDAY 9/14/09
OBJ:  Become familiar with guided reading groups and center activities.
CW:  Students took their spelling pretest.  Any words they missed need to be studied this week for Thursday's spelling test.  Students were also introduced to guided reading groups and center activities.  
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and complete Reading Log.     

FRIDAY 9/11/09
OBJ:  Identify elements in a story.  Illustrate important vobaculary terms to help understand their meanings.
CW:  Today students read pgs 33-37 in our text and used their foldable to help identify elements of the story.  They then illustrated chosen vocabulary words and played a game to see how well they could identify each other's illustrations.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and complete Reading Log. 

THURSDAY 9/10/09
OBJ: Successfully complete the pre-StarBooks survey.  Identify elements of a story.
CW:  Today students completed a survey in the computer lab then continued reading stories in the text.  Students also made a Story Elements foldable to help identify the elements of our story.
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and complete Reading Log. 

WEDNESDAY 9/9/09
OBJ:  Students will use context clues to determine the meaning of selected words.
CW:  Today students read a short story and used the context clues to find the meaning of certain words.  They also answered questions relating to their comprehension of the story content.
HW:  Finish "The Twilight Visitor" worksheet.  Read for 20 minutes and fill out Reading Log.

TUESDAY 9/8/09
CW:  Today students turned in their first Dolphin Weekly Reading Logs and received Dolphin Lottery Tickets for reading extra days beyond the 5 required days per week.  Students also received their new Reading Logs (pink) and need to continue reading for 20 minutes 5 days per week.  Today we also began reading the first story from our reading book and used the vocabulary words to create sentences. 
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and fill out Dolphin Weekly Reading Log

WEDNESDAY 9/2/09
OBJ:  Students will successfully complete our first "Florida Writes" practice.
CW:  Today students were given 45 minutes to complete our first "Florida Writes" practice in 6th grade.  This practice will be scored and serve as a starting point for improving writing skills. 
HW:  Read for 20 minutes and fill out Dolphin Weekly Reading Log.

TUESDAY 9/1/09
OBJ:  Students will read, understand, and answer questions from Junior Scholastic Magazine.
HW:  Read 20 minutes tonight and fill out Dolphin Weekly Reading Log

WEEK 2
MONDAY 8/31/09
OBJ:  Students will understand the proper way to use SMS's Literacy Center and to check out a book. CW:  Today students were introduced to the SMS Literacy Center and had the opportunity to check out a reading book of their choice.  Students were also given their first Dolphin Weekly Reading Log.  They are required to read for 20 minutes, 5 nights per week.  An adult signature is required after each reading session. 
HW:  Read for 20 minutes tonight.  Record information in Reading Log.  

FRIDAY 8/27/09
OBJ:  Students will edit, rewrite, and illustrate their Autobiography Poems. 
HW:  None.  It's been a terrific first week in 6th grade!  Have a wonderful weekend!

THURSDAY 8/27/09
OBJ:  Students will use descriptive words and phrases to complete an Autobiography Poem.
CW:  Today we created sections for LA binders.  Students then used descriptive language to write Autobiography Poems after it was first modeled for them. 
HW:  Finish rough draft of Autobiography Poem   

WEDNESDAY 8/26/09
OBJ:  Students will understand LA Course Guidelines and learn classroom procedures.
CW:  Today we reviewed the LA Course Guidelines and practiced procedures within the classroom.  We also finished our "Find Someone Who" Bingo game.
HW:  Bring in 5 notebook dividers

TUESDAY 8/25/09
OBJ:  Students will understand the rules and procedures of language arts class.
CW:  Today students learned about rules and procedures in LA class and played "Find Someone Who" Bingo to become acquainted with their classmates.
HW:  Get Language Arts  Course Guidelines paper signed and returned.

WEEK 1
MONDAY 8/24/09
OBJECTIVE:  Students will successfully complete their first day of middle school at SMS!
CLASSWORK:  Today students were introduced to classroom procedures, completed necessary classroom paperwork, and became familiar with the SMS campus.
HOMEWORK:  Return signed parent contact form.  Bring in 1 inch binder with dividers.
