Homework

Dear Parents,

Your child will be receiving a monthly homework calendar at the
beginning of each month. Each day your child will complete the assigned task.
The calendar and student work will be kept in a spiral notebook. Please sign
and have your child return the sheet and completed assignments in his/her
GATOR binder at the end of each month.
First grade homework is designed as a time for parents and children
to work together to reinforce concepts taught at school. Along with the
daily assignments, your child needs to read at least 20 minutes each night.
Listening to your child read and reading to your child will help him/her
improve significantly in the area of reading. Please sign and record this
time on the reading log each day.

What we're learning in class can continually be reinforced daily at home as
well. Use these tips in the car, at the grocery store or around the
house. These are just ideas for additional practice, they do not have to be
done every day.

1. Practice handwriting skills

2. Practice writing numbers 1-100

3. Find and make patterns and shapes (point out street signs, containers at
the grocery store, etc...)

4. Practice money skills (identifying coins, counting and making change)

5. Continually work with letters and sounds. One fun way is to cut pictures
out of magazines and make an alphabet book!

6. Always read to and with your child. Work on story elements such as
characters, setting, main idea and sequence of events.

7. Write stories and books with your child. Work on letter formation,
punctuation, spelling and using finger spaces.

8. Review sight words (see the list below). You can put them on flash cards
or play games such as memory matching or finding them and cutting them out of
magazines.

9. Rhyming and opposites. These can be done while cooking dinner, driving in
the car, or at any time! Ask your child, "What rhymes with _____?"

Thank you for your support.
