Curriculum Update:
Language Arts- We are reading a non-fiction book called Lighthouses. We are focusing on the strategy of asking questions before, during, and after reading. Questioning provides a purpose for reading and keeps the reader engaged in the text. It propels the reader forward to search for answers to their questions. Questions are answered many different ways: in the text, from prior knowledge, inferences, and further research.
Grammar- We are learning about simple and compound subjects and predicates.
Math- We will continue our focus on addition strategies. Students are identifying associative, identity, and commutative properties of addition. We have begun our timed addition and subtraction tests. To build fluency, students will strive to accurately compute 100 addition or subtraction facts in 5 minutes or less. We will assess this chapter next week.
Writing- We are working through the writing process to complete our personal narratives. We will assess model text and our own narrative for the trait of “voice”. Voice is the writer’s way of using words and punctuation to show personality. Voice is the trait that makes writing come to life and engages the reader.
Social Studies-We are learning about the three branches (executive, judicial, legislative) and three levels (local, state, national) of our democratic government. Students need to be able to identify each branch along with its responsibilities. We will also learn about the need for a balance of power.
