When should my child be at school?
**Students should arrive at school between 7:15 and
7:40 a.m. We have "morning work"(review),free centers,
or quiet social time until around 7:35, when morning
announcements begin.
**The tardy bell rings at 7:45. At this time, students
who are not already in the room need to check into
the office before proceeding to the classroom.
--------------------------------------
Does my child need to bring a snack or water to school?
**We have a daily snack break.
Please send a nutritious, easy to eat snack,
such as fruit or crackers.
**Water is freely available to all children, as
needed, so it is not necessary to bring any.
However, students are allowed to bring their
own water bottles IF they are clearly labeled,
kept fresh, and DO NOT INTERFERE WITH LEARNING.
--------------------------------------
Questions about dismissal procedures?
**First grade dismissal is approximately 2:10
(one hour earlier on Wednesdays.)
**Addison Charter dictates that children will be released
one hour early on Wednesdays in order for the staff to
participate in Whole Group Study Groups, a staff
development process which has proven to directly
enhance student achievement and learning.
**If you need to pick up your child early, please
sign out through the office before 2:00 (Wed. 1:00)
**For safety reasons, you must send a signed note to me
or a fax to the office (770-578-2702)to make any change
in transportation or dismissal procedure.
--------------------------------------
Can my child bring nuts or peanuts to school?
We do have more than one student with moderate to severe nut allergies, if
ingested. To be on the safe side, plese leave them at home. If you plan to
bring birthday treaats for the class on your child's birthday, I suggest you
send in a non-edible treat for your child to share.
--------------------------------------
What if my child is sick/absent?
**Students are not allowed to come to school within
24 hours of vomiting or fever over 100 degrees.
**Please send a signed note within 48 hours after the
absence, explaining the reason for the absence, in order
for the office to excuse it.
**Excessive unexcused absences may result in referral to
social workers, in accordance with Georgia law.
--------------------------------------
How should I contact the teacher?
** GATOR Book! Please use zipper pouch for this purpose.
** E-mail(katherine.hatcher@cobbk12.org)! I usually
check e-mail 2-3 times a day. This is an easy way to
"converse" about any issue. I REALLY appreciate
your interest and input into your child's day.
** Also, you may phone school (770-578-2700) and leave a message
on my voice mail, although response time may be slower than
with e-mail communication.
--------------------------------------
How do I send in money for lunch, purchases, payments, or donations?
** Lunch is $1.60($2.50 for adults/50 cents for drink.)
You may either pay one day at a time or set up a lunch
account, paying ahead as many days as you wish.
Lunch accounts may also be paid online through the Cobb
County website (www.cobbk12.org) or directly on
https://www.mealpayplus.com/.
** Please send all money in the zipper pouch of the STAR Book.
The money should be in an envelope that is clearly labeled
with child's name and the purpose for the money. Thanks!

How do I know if my child is achieving success at school?
**Each Friday, I send home a communication sheet, noting
any particular concerns or compliments regarding
learning or behavior in the classroom. Please return
with your comments and signature on Monday mornings.
**Of course,I will also call or send a daily note to you
in "Very Important Papers" section of the GATOR Book if
there is an immediate concern.
**School report cards are given out every nine weeks.
**Either parent or teacher may call for a conference
at any time, as needed. Official parent confereces
are in January, but I will be communicating and
possibly having a face-to face conference with each of
you during the first semester as well.
**Communication through notes, e-mails, or phone calls
is always welcome.

Who are our Room Mothers and how can I help?
Ginger- send a note through Mrs. Hatcher to her or call her.

What is a Lexile?
A Lexile is a way to match reading ability
with text difficulty. Not all books have been scored, but
a Lexile number ranging from 200L to 1700L can be found on
some books. The higher the score, the more difficult
the text. The Lexile is NOT a grade equivalent and
should NOT be used to limit your child's reading for
fun. However, matching a reader's ability to a text with
the comparable Lexile measurement should yield about 75%
comprehension, which is ideal for growth -- not
too difficult, but challenging. Addison students'
Lexile levels have not been formally assessed.
Look for more information on this topic when/if
the system is further implemented at Addison.
See a list of Lexile leveled books in HOT STUFF
on this website.

What is DSL?
**"Democratic Service Learning"(DSL)is an element
included in the Addison Charter. By fifth grade,
all Addison students, who have been at the school
for at least three years, should have particpated
in at least one DSL project. Classes decide as a
whole group ("Democratic") on projects that benefit
a community in some way ("Service"). "Learning" goals
are met through an integrated curriculum, while
simultaneously meeting the project goals. This
process is termed "Democratic Service Learning."
