| 1. Reading aloud to your child will help foster of love of literature.
2. Discussing what you read will further develop comprehension skills.
Research shows that effective skills for reading comprehension can be
fostered through read-alouds.
* Talk about connections to the book:
Text-text connections- how it reminds you of another book
Text-self connections - how it reminds you of your own experiences
Text-world connections- how it reminds you of something you have
heard about or world events
* Questioning- what do you wonder about before, during, and after
reading? Are your questions answered?
* Visualizing - share with your child pictures you are thinking of in
your head as you read. Encourage them to do the same.
* Inferring and Predicting - read between the lines and discuss
predictions and inferences.
* Main ideas- help your child see the difference between main ideas and
details.
*Retelling the stories and summarizing - take turns with your child.
These strategies will help students think about what they are hearing and
will improve their comprehension as they continue to work on decoding skills.
