10th (Honors) Am. Lit.

First Semester

First Quarter

Week 1 - Welcome back! Please take a moment to review the summer reading requirements so we're all set to start BES.

Tue, 8/11 - it's not a bad idea to refresh your memory by reviewing BES as we prepare to begin study of the book
Wed, 8/12 - you received two handouts today - skim over the introductory material once, then spend some real time and effort reading and thinking about the Archetypes handout (we'll discuss that in some length in class)

There's a 'Blog' link devoted entirely to your class for - how do I describe it? - random discussions, fanciful musings, and whimsical thoughts. Check out some of last year's posts then toss your hat in the ring and take a stab at this year's first post. It's all right here at DISCUSSION [10th H], or you can access it from the homepage. Have fun!

Thu, 8/13 - I'll continue to discuss/explain archetypes tomorrow so it can't hurt to review the handout I gave you yesterday - I'll make you a deal: everybody review the handout tonight then listen, learn, and participate in class tomorrow... and I won't give you any homework over the weekend (deal?)

Week 2

Mon, 8/17 - read the "Intro to N.A. Lit" packet (the one you received today) and answer the questions by Wednesday
Tue, 8/18 - Intro questions due tomorrow; you received two addtional handouts today - read at least the first one ("World Myths and Folktales") because you will receive additional work/handouts tomorrow
Wed, 8/19 - finish reading any/all handouts you've been given so far; complete Gen/Cheyenne Creation questions; complete translating "Walam Olum"
Thu, 8/20 - tomorrow we'll continue our discussion of the introductory material; you need to have read BES through Ch. 2 by Monday and Ch. 3 (that's the biggie) by Tuesday

Week 3

Mon, 8/24 - by Wednesday, complete the questions for BES Ch. 1-2: include paraphrases and direct quotes for evidence/support as well as page citations when appropriate
Tue, 8/25 - complete HO8 by tomorrow; be prepared to work on/through Ch. 3 by Thursday
Wed, 8/26 - our discussion today went very well; your reward: you don't have to do any homework tonight... but if you want to you can start working on Ch. 3 (interpreting the dream....)
Thu, 8/27 - there's no official homework tonight but you need to be prepared to tackle Ch. 3 on Monday - you know what's coming up so no post is needed tomorrow (feel free to suggest "Discussion" topics!)

Week 4

Mon, 8/31 - begin working on HO15 (questions for Ch. 3) tonight; you will have tomorrow in class to work on it and ask questions (provided you've done some work at home); due Wednesday
Tue, 9/1 - complete HO15 by tomorrow - this is for discussion; it won't be collected/graded
Wed, 9/2 - I do have mercy: study CMT and Chem for tomorrow
Fri, 9/4 - spend some time reviewing my notes for HO16 as well as reviewing HO17 - you don't have to write anything down to turn in on Tuesday, but you should give much thought about the symbolic images in Black Elk's "Great Vision"; reread through Ch. 6 by Wednesday

Week 5

Tue, 9/8 - reread through Ch. 6 by tomorrow
Wed, 9/9 - HO21 (Ch. 4-6 discussion questions) completed by the end of class Friday; remember our discussion about keeping up with your work!

Week 6

Mon, 9/14 - reread Ch. 7-9, then Ch. 10-13 (the former by Wed, the latter by Mon); HO25 due Thursday
Tue, 9/15 - keep up with the readings and the questions for Ch. 7-9; also, compose a poem as we discussed in class (due Monday); instructions:

  • write 20 lines that begin with "my"
  • write 20 lines that begin with "I am"
  • these lines should be serious in tone (though not somber, gloomy, etc.)
  • these lines should be reflective of you and your life
  • the lines will vary in length
  • compose a poem (between 25-35 lines) from the 40 lines you have written
  • include a 3-line chant that repeats 2 times
  • (remember that minimal effort does not impress me)
  • be expressive!

Wed, 9/16 - complete HO25 for tomorrow; read through Ch.13 by Monday; I'm willing to try another OSR this week, but you must bring a book.... and READ it!
Thu, 9/17 - ok, we're a go for OSR tomorrow: don't let me down! as discussed, read through Ch. 16 asap so you can begin work on the next set of questions (over Ch. 14-16) which you will receive on Monday and will be due on Thursday
Fri, 9/18 - remember, you'll get another set of questions on Monday (due Thursday) over Ch. 14-16

Week 7

Mon, 9/21 - read through Ch. 14 by Wednesday and complete HO32 by Thursday; you will have class time to work on this over the next few days, but we will do other things as well so don't plan to just "get it done" in class - this requires a concentrated effort
Tue, 9/22 - concentrated efforts on HO32 will be rewarded.....
Thu, 9/24 - as noted on the board today, there are three remaining sections of BES: Ch. 15-17 (read by Monday), Ch. 18-21 (TBA), and Ch. 22-25 (TBA); we will have OSR tomorrow

Week 8

Mon, 9/28 - HO35 (questions for Ch. 15-17) done by Wednesday; read through Ch. 21 by Thursday
Tue, 9/29 - no change
Thu, 10/1 - work on HO 39/44 so we can complete our study of the book; read through the end of the book by Monday; you will receive your essay topic and instructions for the week

Week 9

Mon, 10/5 - this week will be devoted to work on your essay: I suggest you follow the timeline I provided for you, but you should adapt it to fit your own schedule
Wed, 10/7 - don't forget to bring color-y things for Friday and Monday (magic markers, water colors, etc - things that won't stain floors or clothes are preferable)

Second Quarter

Week 10

Mon, 10/12 - no homework... except to be prepared to finish the mural
Thu, 10/15 - remember that one (or two) of you are going to ask about hanging the mural... the sooner the better
Fri, 10/16 - you got a lot of reading assignments today - work on them in order; have 1-4 completed by Monday and 5-7 by Tuesday (there will be some additional work in all cases, so keep up with the reading)

  2. "Intro to Puritans" (h/o)
  3. "Notable Puritans" (h/o)
  4. Bradford, "from: Plymouth Plantation" (26)

Week 11
Mon, 10/19 - anyone paying any attention at all? ...I have my doubts. Drop me a line and reassure me.
Tue, 10/20 - we will continue our discussion tomorrow: Bradstreeet and Taylor, then Edwards (plus his bio on "Notable Puritans" handout); reread Mather (and his bio on "Notable") by Wednesday; for tomorrow's discussion, have written notes (for discussion, not collection - though I may check your notes) on the following:

  2. "Huswifery" - answer #2, 3 on p. 74
  3. "Sinners" - answer #2, 3, 4 on p. 83

Week 12
Mon, 10/26 - for the next couple of days, we will focus on reading Scarlet Letter; review the handout I gave in class today (I'll bet you wish I'd talked about the important points, but I'm done trying to talk over your talking. You're on your own... for now.)
Tue, 10/27 - no change; you may ask specific questions regarding the book during class, but no whining!
Wed, 10/28 - remember to keep reading SL: you should plan to complete the book and reread the first eight chapters by Friday of next week

Thu, 11/5 - as discussed, you may ask questions tomorrow about the "Themes" handout I gave you today, then questions about SL, then reading (SL or OSR); if you've forgotten about the "Intro" questions for Crucible, it's okay: so did I - let's do that Monday after the vocab quiz

Week 14

Mon, 11/9 - review your handout regarding SL and the first 8 chapters, focusing especially on: Characters - Hester, Pearl, Chillingworth, Dimmesdale; Symbols - contrast light/dark, roses (at the Governor's mansion as well as the rosebush by the prison door); and Themes - secret sin, the nature of evil, knowledge/guilt
Tue, 11/10 - complete the intro questions (Crucible) by Thursday
Wed, 11/11 - intro questions by tomorrow
Thu, 11/12 - good class today! (you all get biscuits if you wag your tails!); tomorrow we can have open-ended discussion of Scarlet Letter so bring your questions.... (anything through Ch. 12 is fair game - beyond that, I may have to think about it)
Fri, 11/13 - plan to be through SL, Ch. 16 by Monday (next Monday, that is - the 23rd); I meant to tell you that there's a Crucible vocab quiz (2nd group) on Tuesday, but forgot - pass that info along to your friends

Week 15
Mon, 11/16 - remember your vocab quiz (Crucible Group 2 - #34-58) tomorrow; read SL through Ch.16 by Monday; (someone should ask me about the motif of power/empowerment tomorrow)

Week 16

Mon, 11/23 - for this short week, your assignments are: vocab quiz tomorrow; SL discussion Monday (11/30)

Week 17

Mon, 11/30 - SL essay tomorrow: you will have three questions (choose two) that cover these concepts: (1.) the nature of evil and the effects of secret sin on major characters; (2.) the relationship between identity and society, especially the Puritan doctrine and its impact on Hester --> how society views & defines her and how she views & defines herself; Crucible vocab quiz 4 Friday
Wed, 12/2 - tomorrow is a reading day - you may bring OSR or read SL/Crucible (remember that you have to finish your 2nd or 3rd reading of SL by Monday and that there will be an essay question on the exam from Crucible (Hale and hypocrisy)); if tomorrow's reading session is productive and successful we can do it again on Friday after the vocab quiz
Thu, 12/3 - very productive (and quiet!) reading today - we'll do it again tomorrow.... after the vocab quiz (don't forget!)
