First Semester 2009-2010
1st Quarter
Week 1 - Welcome back! Please take a moment to review the summer
reading requirements so we start the year off right.
Tue, 8/11 - as discussed in class today, there will be a check
test on AQW later this week or first thing next week; you should be
wrapping up your 2nd reading....
Wed, 8/12 - you received your vocabulary assignment today
as well as some notes on how it will be graded; remember: you have 57 words -
work on them a bit each week (we'll have about 3 weeks); we will discuss quiz
and due dates next week
Thu, 8/13 - AQW quiz is slated for Monday - use the
weekend to prepare
Fri, 8/14 - have a great weekend!
Week 2
Mon, 8/17 - because of the weird schedule Friday, we have to
move the AQW quiz to tomorrow; vocab 1-19 due Friday; first writing assignment
starts tomorrow; reread through Ch. 4 by Monday for next writing assignment
Tue, 8/18 - follow the example we discussed in class for
HO1 (a generation of men destroyed by war) and write a paragraph (or
two) for HO2 (the enemy must be an abstraction); define abstraction,
brainstorm, and create an outline before you start writing; submit a final
draft of your paragraph writing exercise on Thursday; vocab 1-19 due Friday
Wed, 8/19 - HO2 (typed, double-spaced) due tomorrow; vocab
1-19 Friday; HO3 should be an on-going project where you record information as
you come across it while rereading the text - this will give you a more
complete reference when it is time to do a longer character analysis next week
Thu, 8/20 - vocab due tomorrow; HO2 (revised) due Monday;
tomorrow in class you may work on the next 19 vocab words, you may read AQW
(through Chapter 4 by Monday), or you may read your OSR book
Week 3
Mon, 8/24 - complete HO5 by tomorrow according to the example
set and discussed in class for HO4
Tue, 8/25 - complete HO6 by tomorrow (use HO4-5 as your
model); reread through Ch. 9 by Monday
Wed, 8/26 - you and your partner decided which two
characters to analyze for HO7-8; you are to work independently
as you each complete both sides of this handout: if you work
together and have identical handouts, you will have only half the information
you need for the next step (and will get only half the credit!)
Thu, 8/27 - don't forget vocab 20-38 due tomorrow;
following the instructions in class today, you and your partner must complete
a formal character analysis (one does HO7, the other does HO8) on Monday; come
to class tomorrow prepared to work on one of the following: OSR (you must have
the book and read the book; this isn't just for show); HO7/8; read AQW through
Ch. 9 (by Mon.); or vocab 39-57 (due next Friday) - no post needed for tomorrow
Week 4
Mon, 8/31 - use the rubric you and your partner worked on in
class to edit and revise your character analysis: turn in your revision, your
marked-up draft, and the rubric tomorrow; don't forget to have reread through
Ch. 9
Tue, 9/1 - reread through Ch. 12 by Tuesday; vocab 3 due
Friday (Vocab Quiz 1 Friday, 9/11)
Wed, 9/2 - begin working on HO10 as discussed in class
(mind the due dates written on the handout); rough draft due Friday
Fri, 9/4 - work on revisions for your letter depending on
what your peers said in their review; reread through Ch. 12 by Tuesday
Week 5
Tue, 9/8 - work with your partner to complete HO11 by tomorrow;
letters due Monday; Vocab Quiz 1 Friday; AQW test Thursday, 9/17
Wed, 9/9 - as discussed and listed on the board today,
here are your upcoming due dates:
-
Friday, 9/11: Vocab Quiz 1; HO12 formal outline ("The Two Faces of
Himmelstoss" completed by end of class); HO2 ("Abstraction") revisions
-
Monday, 9/14: Letter to Kantorek/Mrs. Duval - final draft
-
Thursday, 9/17: final test on AQW
-
Friday, 9/18: Vocab Quiz 2 (Vocab Quiz 3 Friday, 9/25)
Week 6
Mon, 9/14 - as discussed and outlined in class today, you have a
busy week: AQW test (whole book) Thursday; Vocab Quiz 2 Friday; "Two Faces of
Himmelstoss" (Contrast Essay) due Friday
Fri, 9/18 - you received your Poetry and Short
Stories packets this week: read the first story, "Birds on the Western
Front," using the Reading Strategy handout I gave you in class
today; we will discuss that story on Monday (if you're out for Marine Bio,
make sure you get the handout from me Monday afternoon and lecture/discussion
notes from someone reliable) and begin poetry on Tuesday
Week 7
Mon, 9/21 - if you were on the Marine Bio trip, make sure you've
gotten the handout and lecture notes from today (you are responsible for
knowing everything about "Birds on the Western Front"); you must do at
least two readings of each story in order to understand them - read once
straight through and make notes, research what you do not know/understand,
then reread with your notes in hand; read "The Bowmen" and "The Scaremonger"
by Friday
Tue, 9/22 - don't forget to make authors' biographies part
of your studied reading of the stories
Thu, 9/24 - since Friday's a short schedule (and I kind of
forgot about it), AQW Vocab Quiz 3 is moved to Monday; you're still
responsible for the stories, "The Bowmen," and "The Scaremonger" by tomorrow;
read the next two ("Soldier's Home" and "The Fly") by Wednesday and the
following two ("War," "The First Years of My Life") by Monday, 10/5
Week 8
Mon, 9/28 - you cannot afford to keep failing reading quizzes;
read the stories and use the strategies we've discussed - "Soldier's Home" and
"The Fly" by Wednesday; "War" and "The First Years of My Life" by Monday
Tue, 9/29 - we'll finish Sassoon tomorrow and we'll
discuss the two short stories as well, time permitting
Thu, 10/1 - Wilfred Owen tomorrow; have the stories read by
Monday
Fri, 10/2 - poetry/stories test Friday (10/9); OPTIONAL
ASSIGNMENT: research propaganda posters of WWI; in the same fashion,
create an original poster designed to sell the war... or the peace; due
Monday, 10/12; do not submit poor quality work - the assignmnet is not
mandatory, but a poor grade will not be overlooked
Week 9
Mon, 10/5 - start reviewing your notes to prepare for Friday's
test
Wed, 10/7 - posters are due Monday, 10/12; for Friday's
test, you are responsible for all stories (except Faulkner's) and all poems
(except Lowell's); format: Matching (authors--works); quote
identification (author--work + significance of quote); short answer (thematic
comprehension and discussion/lecture recall)
2nd Quarter
Week 10

Week 11
Mon, 10/19 - webquest research and reading this week
Week 12
Tue, 10/27 - answer the four discussion questions you were given
in class and read Document 1-A through Document 1-L
Wed, 10/28 - continued lecture/discussion tomorrow; also,

Week 13
Mon, 11/2 - TEWWG vocab quiz on column 1 words Friday, 11/13;
bring your HR packet to class
Tue, 11/3 - read the remaining Langston Hughes poems in
your packet and assign one (or more) of the three themes we established in
class today
