How can I help my child at home with phonics?
Look at side 1 of your child's paper. Everything on side 2 will have an
example like it on side 1 that you can compare it to. Let your child be your
helper. They have been thoroughly instructed about how to code the words.
Ask him/her to be you "teacher" and explain it to you. They can DO IT !!!
Go to the Saxon Phonics website: http://www.saxonpub.com

What do I need to know about taking AR tests?
1. Don't read a book at maximum reading level for an AR Test. Your child
needs to understand what he/she reads and be able to answer questions about
it.Harder books are just for pleasure reading.
2. We ask each child EVERY day if he/she is ready to take a test. They can
usually take it that day, and then get a new book,if they tell us they are
ready.
3. Your child should read the book at least 3 times before taking the test.
Please ask him/her questions such as: What happened in the beginning, the
middle, and in the end. Who are the characters? Was there a problem & how
did they solve it? Where did the story take place. Your child can answer
these questions to him/her self as a way of preparing.
4. On Thursday we take a test on the story we have read aloud in class. We
may not have time for Libary book tests on Thursday.
5. PLEASE only check out 1 book at a time. More books are confusing to a
first grader all at once. They can almost always get a new book the day
that they take the test on their current book, so there is no real need to
have more than 1 at a time.
