We are all given many chances in our lifetime, but this is my chance
to make a difference in the life of a child. When I became a teacher I
wanted to reach out to all learners, since not all students learn in the
same way. Students that fail or do poorly in school are probably the most
intelligent students, but they were not taught using their strengths. Many
times the teaching strategy is listening to the teacher without any other
stimulating props to draw in the visual learner or using movement to get the
attention of the kinesthetic learner. I want to change the way students
think about learning. It should be enjoyable and fun.
I have found that when I use different methods to teach I don’t
need to discipline the students, and I usually find many ways to reward them
for their great accomplishments. They stay busy working, moving, and
learning. Sometimes it is so much fun they don’t even realize that they are
learning. As an adult, I don’t remember a lot from my school experience,
except the things I learned when the teacher made it fun. I also only
remember one teacher that took the time to show me that he cared about me.
That is all they want – for someone to show that they care about them, and
they will start to exceed.
Students should move on to the next school year excited about
learning and know that the teacher cares about them. The encouragement to
work hard and do their best can come from the teacher, as well as, the
parent. I believe that teachers and parents are partners working together
to help each child succeed. I often think about the poem I read that
states “Having a child is like watching your heart walking around outside
your body (Unknown author)”. When I think how precious each child is to
someone that loves him/her, I know I must treat that child with kindness and
love because that is what I would want for my child. Even though, in some
cases there are neglectful parents, that just means that I need to show love
and attention even more to help them succeed.
As a teacher we have many responsibilities, but also many rewards.
Every time students understand something that they couldn’t get before or
smile because you are helping them learn when they didn’t have the self-
confidence to go above and beyond, then I know I am doing the right thing.
It is my responsibility not to let one child think they can’t make it in
school. It is imperative that they understand how smart and wonderful they
are to the one person they see almost every day for 180 days. Kids are my
heart, and I will always bless them with understanding and encouragement.

Hello, my name is Cindy Applegate, and I am a fifth grade teacher. I was
born in Guyana, South America. My nationality is Guyanese, but my ancestors
came from India. I am 35 years old with two wonderful children Kevin (11)
and Alyssa (9). My husband's name is also Kevin, and we have been married
for 14 years. We were both military (Kevin is retired), so we have lived in
Columbus on and off about 13 years. I am very proud to have served my
country in the Army for 5 years. My husband and I decided that I would no
longer stay in the Army, so we could have a family where I would stay at
home with the children. I was very blessed to be able to earn my Master's
in Elementary Education and work at Britt David. I love living in Columbus
and the many wonderful friends we have made here. We are excited about the
many wonderful years ahead.
