What is the AR requirement in second grade?
Each student is required to read at least six AR books on his/her specific
reading level, passing each accompanying test at 80% or higher.
Students are given 30 minutes of quiet reading time each day in class
and are able to visit the library and take needed tests almost everyday.
Any books that are not on your child's level will not count towards his/her
goal.
--------------------------------------
Can my child use books from the public library as AR books?
Yes, as long as they are
*the appropriate level for your child -and-
*we have the accompanying test in our database.

What is 'millionaire?'
Studies have shown that when a child reads a million words on his/her
independent reading level, that his/her reading level and vocabulary
increases by one complete grade level. The number of books to
achieve this depends on the reading level. Since easier books are
shorter with fewer words and more pictures, it takes more books to read
the approximate million word goal. Upper grade books have more
words and fewer pictures, so it doesn't take as many books. For
second grade, children are required to read 125 books to reach
'Millionaire' status. Students are to record every book they read, each
time they read it, on the book log provided by the teacher. When the log
is complete, students may turn it in to receive credit. When it is
documented that a student has read 125 books, he/she will be added to
our 'Wall of Frames' outside the cafeteria which highlights our successful
readers.

Can the books my child reads for AR count towards the millionaire goal?
Yes, just list the title on the reading log each time the book is read.

When are tests given?
Spelling tests and Reading Comprehension tests are always given on
Fridays. Phonics and Math tests are given every five lessons, so the
days the tests will fall on vary. Social Studies and Science
tests occur at the end of each three week unit. Grammar tests
occur whenever we have completed and adequately reviewed the
material to be tested. For all of these, the testing day will vary. Most
tests are announced by way of each student's assignment book and are listed
on the web site homework page about a week in advance.
