Reading at Home

Try using these questions as you read with your child.

               Book Discussion Questions For Home

               REMEMBER THAT READING IS THINKING!!

Plot:
1.  What happened in the story?  What happened first, next, last?
2.  What might have happened if a certain event had not taken place?
3.  Were you able to predict the ending?
4.  Which chapter was the most important to the story? Why?

Setting
1.  Where did the story take place?
2.  Could there be a place like this?  Do you know of a place like this?
3.  When did the story take place?  (past, present, future)
4.  How did the writer create the atmosphere for the setting?

Characterization
1.  Which character did you like best?  Why?
2.  How did the author discribe the characters?
3.  Find a passage that tells you about a character's personality.
4.  How did the characters change during the story?

Author Style
1.  What special words did the author use to help you hear, see, smell, 
taste, or feel things?
2.  What pictures has the author's writing left in your mind?
3.  How does the author let you know when and where the story takes place?
4.  What did you like best about this author?

Affective
1.  How did you feel while reading the book?  Why did you feel that way?
2.  What was the most exciting/unusual/mysterious incident?
3.  Does the mood of the story change?  How?
4.  Why did you select this book?
