Homework

Parents,
If your child has Language Arts and Reading in my Resource class, please
be sure you are aware of their nightly homework.
In spelling, students are to study their wordlists and dictation
sentence every night. I suggest to parents that instead of paper and pencil
each night, your child may also practice writing their words using shaving
cream, flour, or something similar. Children usually love the change! It
also increases visual memory! Almost every week, I give our pretest list on
Monday and the posttest is on Friday. Essential, or high frequency, words are
included on this list.
Be sure your child reads at least 15 minutes each night. I am
stressing Accelerated Reader books, but other books are fine too. Our
Accelerated Reader list can be found on the school's website. They should
fill out the reading log sheet in their red folders.
Math students should be studying basic facts each night. At present,
we are trying to master our multiplication facts 0-12. Drill, drill, drill
with your child until they know the products immediately!
Thursday folders will usually come home each Thursday afternoon. This
folder will be labeled "Resource" and is red. Inside are graded papers
completed. I ask that you take time to look over them, discuss them, and
help your child correct mistakes. Return only the papers marked "Correct and
Return."
A great homework suggestion is that you have your child orally read the
spelling stories in their weekly packets. Also, have them read the phonics
worksheets aloud to you. Math students should drill basic facts in addition,
subtraction, and multiplication.
