January 22, 2010

We have gotten back in the swing of things and are working really hard. Next
week is conference week and we are looking forward to meeting with everyone.
Also remember the entire week is early release which means school ends at
12:20.

Unfortunately, we had to reschedule our class store. Hopefully we were not
too disappointed. It will be Friday, January 29 at 8:15, so if you would
like to come check it out, please do.

We have started practicing test taking skills to help us prepare for the
CRCTs. Coach books come home every night with a math and language arts
assignment. Please remind your child that these need to come back to school
every day.

You should have received the Six Flags Reading program. Read for 6 hours and
receive a free ticket. Turn in form by February 22. We will use this instead
of a reading log, which will start back up next week. All children should be
reading nightly in order to continue growing with their reading comprehension
and vocabulary.

Field Trip envelopes are coming home today. Please return them ASAP, so we
know if we will have enough money to go. The cost is $15.00 for three
activities.

January 25 -29 Early Release School Ends at 12:20
January 29 Class Store

What we worked on this week:

Reading: This nine weeks focus is Informational text. We are reviewing all
the features of nonfiction that help us comprehend the facts. We are
researching an animal found in Georgia and will compose an informational
writing with our facts. Encourage your child to read nonfiction for their
reading logs. The children continued reading their Literature Circle book.
Some groups are almost done so don't forget to include this on your rocket
reader form. We also began listening to the story The Whipping Boy. We
wrote letters from one character to another. Ask your child about it.

Math: Fractions and decimals were our focus this week. The children have
done very well with this. We learned some rap songs to help us remember the
concepts. Now onto measurement focusing on length. Math log will be
discontinued for now so we can do a reading log. Still continue to have your
child work on IXL.

Grammar: We continued with the pronoun. We sure do know them!!!

Writing: Finished up our first informational piece on the Georgia regions.
Now onto our animals. The children are learning the reading skill on how to
determine importance versus the fluff when researching and writing.

Science: We are continuing with Georgia Regions. The children will be
assigned a project to create the habitat that your animal lives in. Please
have your child bring in a box to create this in. Also have your child start
collecting what materials they might need to create it. We will make these in
school starting the end of next week.

Social Studies: Ask your child to identify some major rivers in the United
States the next time you see a map. You should be impressed. Also, ask them
where Mary McLeod Bethune is from. We have learned how she has made a
difference in our lives today. The children made up songs to the tune of Miss
Mary Mack, ask them to hear it, they were so cute.
