Writing Workshop
We have learned in our classroom that authors
come in many shapes, sizes, and write all kinds of texts. Some authors publish
books with only pictures. Others use one word, labels, short phrases,
sentences, and paragraphs. All of our students are writers, and we all write
in different ways.
Right now in writers' workshop, we are
learning to become purposeful writers. To begin our sessions, we think of
something that we have experienced in our lives. It can be a place that we
have visited or something that we have done. Once we have a topic in mind, we
then go and draw a picture of the experience we want to share with others.
Once the picture is completed, we then add the text to tell about the picture.
In time, we will begin to learn how to add
additional information to our pictures and then our writing. This will help us
to expand our writing and the details we share with our readers.
A good way to help your child in this area is
to discuss experiences and trips that have occurred in their lives. Then have
them draw a picture about their experience and write about it. For fun, why
don't you try it, too. What a great way for you to model this for your child!
