How do I contact Mrs. Diaz?
You can write me a note and place it in your child's yellow
folder. I try to check these folders personally every morning as
soon as your child enters the classroom. I will personally
answer every note. If you request a phone call from me and I do
not have the time to do that immediately, I will ask Mrs.
Patterson to call. If you still need to speak to me, then she
will let me know and I will call you back as soon as I have time
to do so. You can also call my cell phone at any time. Leave a
voice mail if I am not able to answer it. If you have an email
account, you can email me at mdiaz@mcsdga.net. I am happy to
provide a phone number where you can reach me personally. Mrs.
Patterson feels the same way I do about this, we are very open to
and in fact we encourage communications between parents and
teachers.
Can I meet with you if I have concerns about my child?
Absolutely! Please do!!!! Our goal is to ensure that your child
has a successful year. We need to consider ourselves partners in
this goal. The closer our bond in that partnership, the better we
will be able to serve your child's needs.
What can I do to help my child with their sight words?
We give 5 new sight words per week. It is important to stay
caught up with these because as you can see in a month's time
your child could fall behind by 20 words. Tests are given
approximately every other week on ALL words. We will tell you
what "grade" your child makes on these tests in a percentage
form. To achieve an "A", 90% of all words must be recognized and
verbalized by your child on a test. These words will be used in
stories and in writing during the year. It is urgent to stay on
track with them so that they will end the year with 90% or
greater.
Make flashcards to help your child with these words. They do NOT
need to know how to spell them, although practice writing them
won't hurt. When you use the flashcards, change the order that
you show them to the child because they will memorize the order
and they will memorize any special marks or bends, etc. on your
card itself. This is why some children do well at home, but are
not able to tell us the same word written on paper at school.
Therefore, change the way you go over the words sometimes. Try
chalk on the sidewalk, purchase a small dry erase board to use at
home, etc. Make two sets of the cards and play "go fish" using
them. Play games with the cards such as laying them on the floor
and asking your child to sort them by how many letters they have,
what letter they end with, or begin with, etc.
What can I do to be involved with my child's classroom?
We welcome visitors and volunteers. If you are unable to visit
the school physically due to transportation or work, then just be
an active participant at home. Ask your child daily how their
day was, look over their papers and give them smiling praise and
encouragement, but firmness when needed. READ with them daily.
Make games out of sight words, word families, math facts, etc.

How many children are in the class?
Presently there are 19 children in our classroom. In the first
months we have a lot of additions and withdrawals which results
in the classroom not being 100% settled. They sit 6 or 7 to
a horseshoe type table, so we need them all to mind their P's and
Q's for a quiet and productive classroom.
