Power Verb                 Meaning 

 1.  Trace               List in steps in order of sequence; follow

2.  Analyze            Take apart; investigate; break down

3.  Infer                  Read between the lines; guess based on observations 

4.  Evaluate           Judge; find the good and bad; rate it; weigh pros and cons 

5.  Formulate        Create; build; make a plan; make, construck 

6.  *Describe          Tell all about it; give details using your senses; find words that make a picture 

7.  Support              Back it up with details; give reasons and evidence; prove your answer 

8.  *Explain             Tell how; make it clearer (use 5 W's and H)

9.  Summarize         Give the short version; main points; retell in your own words; paraphrase 

10.  *Compare          All the ways they are alike; similarities 

11.  *Contrast           All the ways they are different 

12.  Predict               What will happen next (if you had a "crystal ball"); look into the future

READING STRATEGIES (UNRAAVEL) 

 

Underline title (gives information)

Now predict the passage (using title---try to tie in wih an emotion)

Run through and number the paragraphs

Are  you reading the questions (at the end of the passage)?  --so you know what to look for

Are the important words "circled?"  (bold, underline, all caps, repeated, transitional words, etc.)

Venture through the passage (carefully read the passage)

Eliminate obviously incorrect anwers from your choices

Let the questions be answered, and write the paragraph number (AND line number) where answer found

Stress reading EVERY day

Use higher order thinking questions

Use complete sentences

**Reteach missed questions

Provide structure in the classroom

Make every student participate every day

Use inclusion curriculum (science achievements from every culture)

Get audience emotionally involved (how does the topic affect human lives)

Teach at least one grade level from time to time (tell students when/why)

NEVER give up!

Standardized test prep in class:

Use "definition of the day" or "daily math word problem"

Include standardized type questions on assessments (tests, quizzes, etc.) and homework assignments.

Use scantron tests from time to time (remember to erase clearly)

Give TIME tests/quizzes from time to time (CRCT is timed)

Encourage students for follow written and oral directions

Collaboration
