Parent Information

8/31
Hello everyone! I am certainly enjoying my class and I hope that my students are enjoying class also. I
just wanted to remind everyone that Open House is this Thursday at 6:30. Thursday is also individual
picture day. Open House is very important to attend. I will be going over all of my expectations and
procedures for the entire school year. I'm sure many of you have questions about what we do and how
we do it. I will be able to answer those questions and give you helpful information. Please mark your
calendars and find childcare for this important event. Only parents are to attend.

· SPELLING: We will be working on Word Sort 2, which focuses on sorting words with inflected
endings such as -ed or -ing. We will be sorting words into three groups: e-drops, double consonants,
and no change patterns. Nightly homework has changed, so be sure to check our class website or your
yellow take-home folder for your assignments.

· GRAMMAR: In grammar, we will look at compound subjects and predicates and move into a study
of compound sentences. Since combining sentences often adds variety to our writing style, learning
how to correctly form and identify compound sentences is a very important skill!

· SCIENCE: We will begin studying one of our most important natural resources--water! We'll look at
the states of water, the water cycle, and properties of water! Expect to complete some exciting hands-
on experiments as we investigate WATER! A water study guide will soon be coming home to help you
prepare for a water exam next week.

· SOCIAL STUDIES: Our unit over the basics of economics will soon come to a close, as our new
companies will "pitch" investment ideas. Our economics assessment is Friday.

· MATH: We will expand our knowledge of rounding/estimating whole numbers to determine how to
use estimation to find sums and differences. We will also ask ourselves, "When do we estimate and we
do we need an exact answer?" Additionally, we'll begin using algebra to solve functions, expressions,
and input/output tables. We will be having a math test on Friday, so be sure to complete your nightly
homework

· Important Class Events:

o SALLY FOSTER SALES: We are still growing "leaps and bounds" thanks to our PTA fundraiser. Keep
selling Sally Foster wrapping paper to friends and family, to earn money for our school and a chance for
many cool prizes for yourself!
