I have many questions to ask...where do I go to get some of them answered?
You may look below, talk with someone in the school office or with a parent
that is involved with East Side.
--------------------------------------
What does my child need to know for the ending of kindergarten?
1. How to write in D'Nealian handwriting the Big and Little letters of the
alphabet.
2. Recognize and spell all the caterpillar words (Sight Words).
3. Know name, address/zip code, telephone number, birthdate
4. Be able to zip and tie
5. Recognizes the big and little letters of the alphabet.
6. Can give basic sounds to the letters of the alphabet.

8. Can count to 100.
9. How to get along with one another
10. Keeping hands and feet to themselves
11. Showing RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY
12. Listening and following directions
13. To be continued
--------------------------------------
What assessments does my child have during the year?
1. GKAP-R (Georgia Kindergarten Assessment Program - Revised)This is an on-
going assessment throughout the year. It starts in August and goes until
April.
2. Portfolio (contains reading, writing and math samples for the 1st grade
teacher)
3. Georgia Writing Samples (4x a year)
4. DRA...Developmental Reading Assessment (beginning and ending of the year)
5. Observations
--------------------------------------
Does my child get a report card?
Yes, three times a year...every 12 weeks. This is different than grades 1-5
who get their report cards every 9 weeks.
--------------------------------------
Are there any parent/teacher conferences during the year?
Yes, there is one in October.
--------------------------------------
What is the cost of a lunch?
A child pays $1.60 for lunch and that includes a drink. A drink alone costs
$.50. Adult meal is $2.50. You may pay the lunchroom weekly or monthly
and then they inform you when your child's account needs reimbursement. Your
child may bring their own lunch from home. Parents are welcome to eat with
their child during lunch. PLEASE meet us in the lunchroom and NOT at our
room when it is our time to go to lunch.
--------------------------------------
What does VIP mean?
You may sign your child up for his/her VIP week (when they are the Very
Important Person). It can coincide with their birthday. The VIP child will
be our line leader, go to the office with notes, etc. during that week. They
will fill out a large tagboard before this week showing photos of themselves,
their families, etc. and explain this to the class at the beginning of the
week. The poster is put on display for all to see during that week. Please
sign your child up for his/her week during "Meet and Greet."
--------------------------------------
May I disburse birthday invitations out at school & What treat may I send in?
1. Birthday invitations are not allowed to be sent out from school.
2. We encourage any healthful birthday treat but the fun foods that can be
brought in are cupcakes, cookies or a large chocolate chip cookie cake
(sheet). No birthday cakes or liquids please.
--------------------------------------
Is there a snack during the day?
Yes and No...Some years we have had snack time and some years the parents and
I decided not to have snack time. In the beginning of school the children
are all excited for a snack but gradually they have no time for it because
they want to use their time for outdoor activities (snack time is during
afternoon recess). I have discovered that their snacks go to waste. All
children get a drink of water when they come in from outside. Water is
available all day long to each child at the drinking fountain in the
room. Please DO NOT send in a bottle of water. If we do decide to go with
snacks, they can ONLY be SMALL healthful snacks. If it is not healthful, your
child will be asked to put it back in his/her bookbag. The child's name HAS
to be put on the snack at home BEFORE he/she comes to school with permanent
marker. A snack has to be in a disposable bag (with your child's name on it)
since NONE of the snacks come back to the kindergarten room after outdoor
time. It is not healthful to bring snacks back into the room once they have
been outside.
--------------------------------------
Does my child rest at school?
Yes, it is a time for your child's body to relax. The state of Georgia
requires a rest time in kindergarten classes. Please ONLY send in a small
pillowcase for your child to rest on.
--------------------------------------
May I volunteer in my child's classroom?
Yes, I encourage all parents to volunteer in the classroom. The BEST time is
during our center time. We will need a Room Representative/Room Parent to be
our facilitator. I will need coordinators to help the Room Representative
and to organize the volunteers. To help the Room Parent, we will need a
Center Time Coordinator and a Field Trip Coordinator and possibly and
Computer Coordinator. Please sign up for a coordinator position and/or to
VOLUNTEER in the classroom...especially during Center time! Look for a sign-
up sheet during "Meet and Greet" and "Orientation" night.
--------------------------------------
What time do we go for lunch?
10:51-11:21 .... we will meet you in the lunchroom and not in our room.
