Hello everyone. Target had a field trip on Wednesday so our target day was switched from Tuesday to
Wednesday. That completely threw me off for a day and I was thinking today was Thursday!! We even
almost forgot about our book buddies!! So I apologize but I was unable to properly prepare the
Friday folders with comments and any missing homework slips. So yes, Miss Wood forgot to do her
homework!! :)

The 9 week grading period officially ended today but I am still collecting some grades and tying up
some loose ends. The class will be taking their natives and regions test on Wednesday. Today we
completed the study guide for it in class. The study guide is basically the test but the test is
multiple choice. I have informed the class that there will be no retakes possible since I need the
grade for the report cards going home on Friday. There is no reason for anyone to need a retake if
it is properly studied for. One study strategy for this is to create flash cards. You can write the
question on one side and the answer on the other. Quiz your knowledge of both sides. You can play
Jeopardy by reading the answer and having to guess what the question must be. Again, there will be
no retakes allowed for this test due to report cards. They currently have only two social studies
grades so this can make or break their grade on the report card. Please study!! :)

Hello parents. I'm sending a HUGE THANK YOU to the Stasko family for sending in an awesome pencil
sharpener. It is one of the old fashioned types and it has a suction cup so you can put it anywhere.
It's quiet and portable. I've never had so many students need to use a pencil sharpener. I don't
know how they survived last week! So we obviously love it! Thanks again!

I'm sure most of you are aware that report cards will be going home next Friday. This is a time I
like to refer to in class as crunch time. We have to get in the last summative assessments and leave
some time for those that may need to retake assessments. I will not be completing the report cards
until next Wednesday in order for everyone to be able to get their work done and turned in. Your
children should be doing a lot of studying! Check the homework tab for upcoming quizzes and tests.

Hello parents. I haven't received any emails regarding our pencil sharpener issue so we are still
without pencil sharpeners. Students may need to bring in a personal hand-held pencil sharpener. A
few students already have their own and they are sharing but it can be distracting and time
consuming. Thank you for your help and understanding! :)

There will be no homework assignments this week. Has Miss Wood lost her mind?!?!? No, I haven't!
Your children have been so wonderful that they have completely filled the compliment jar full of
marbles. They are already on their way to filling it up again. Just last week, Ms. Mavity
complimented us on how well we walk through the hallways. A compliment from administration gets a
few more than one marble!! Once the jar is full, I take suggestions from the class on how they want
to be rewarded. We then put our heads down for a private vote. Students are asked to
choose two of their favorite rewards. For the first time ever, I had the suggestion for no homework
for the week. It was a close one between that and my dog, Ody, coming to visit. So I will not be
assigning any homework this week. There are a few tests and quizzes to be aware of though and I told
students that their grades are very important so they may still need to do some studying. Check the
homework section for the tests and quizzes.

On another note, a field trip permission form was sent home last Friday. The price on the permission
slip is incorrect. Students were supposed to scratch that out and write $22.75. So please note that
that is the amount due for this trip.

Lastly, HELP!! Something is up with our pencil sharpeners! My old one finally quit on us and I can't
get anything to happen. My heavy duty one has something stuck in it so it won't sharpen. Can I
please have someone replace my old one with a new heavy duty one? If you can help us out
with that, send me an email. Do you know someone who knows how to take apart the newer one to try
and fix it? If you do, please send me an email and I will send the sharpener home with your child.
Thank you all so much for what you do. I couldn't do it all without you! :)

I have decided to make a slight change to one of my procedures. Thursday folders are now becoming
Friday folders!! It can be a little difficult to document behavior and missing homework assignments
from a Friday to a Thursday. This change will allow me to really and truly focus on your child's
week from Monday to Friday. This change will also give you the entire weekend to look over the work
in your child's folder. Please discuss their papers with them and ask them questions about what they
are learning. The folders are to be returned to school on Monday. I hope that you like this change.
It seems to make more sense to me and Friday folders just sounds better! :)

Have you noticed any new signs as you drive into the parking lot? The Foundation is starting their
Capital Campaign today and it runs through October 10th. The Foundation has greatly helped our
school by purchasing the 6 + 1 Writing traits program, built 2 new playgrounds, bought each
classroom an LCD projector and cart, brought East Side the after school enrichments (Yoga, Chess,
Drama, etc.) and they have funded the Science Lab and Science Lab teacher this year. Basically, they
are WONDERFUL!!!! Your donation will help keep these amazing programs and technology assistance
coming. Please donate to our Foundation during this campaign. If you have any questions, go to
www.eastsideelementary.com and click on the Foundation tab. Thank you all so much for helping East
Side become an even better place to learn! :)

I just wanted to inform everyone that I am currently locked out of my email!! It has happened to
everyone in our school and it has to deal with passwords expiring etc. I did call the help desk
earlier today. I was accessing my email but then I walked away to do something else and when I came
back I was logged off and unable to log back in. I will call the help desk again tomorrow. So I
apologize for not being able to respond if you emailed me today. I was in the middle of a response
when I was pulled away and then locked out! I hope to get back to you tomorrow! :)

You have until midnight tonight if you wish to purchase books from the Scholastic Book Club order
forms that I sent home awhile ago. The user name is woodswonders and the password is reading. If you
have any problems and wish to complete the order, send me an email and I will extend the deadline
since this is our first go around. I will be sending more orders home throughout the year. I hope
everyone had a wonderful long weekend. I enjoyed my weekend in Maine! :)

Hello parents and students. I wanted to thank my students and inform my parents on how well we
handled the weather watch situations. The students were amazing this morning!! If you were unaware,
we are required to go in the building during weather watches. Teachers have designated classrooms to
move their students to. We try our best to continue our regular lesson plans. Mrs. Appel and I share
the music room. We typically do a lot of the same things so this is a great match. Of course this
morning was a little different because we were already in specials and the watch went to a warning
very quickly. We were in the media center and the students quickly went into the guidance
counselors' offices to get into their positions. I'm very proud of how well everyone handled
everything. The warning didn't last too long but we did remain under a watch until around 10:00.
After that, all went back to normal.

Next week we will begin science. YEAH!! Our first unit of study is.............water and weather!!
The students had a lot of awesome questions today. Soon they will have those answers!!

Don't forget about book orders if you are interested. The deadline for this order is September 2nd.
I believe you have until midnight! :)

Thanks again to my wonderful class. :)
