NEWSFLASH!!!!!!
Because of the weather forecast, our 4th grade picnic will be on Wednesday-not Tuesday!
It's hard to believe this is our last week of school. So many of you have asked if I'm ready for
summer. I'm not! I don't want to give up being with
this group of students everyday. I can't imagine ever being given such a wonderful mix of
personalities. Each one of these students has touched
my heart. They all have special talents and gifts and I am going to dearly miss them. Thank you
for doing your job in raising responsible,
respectful, and thoughtful citizens. They have worked hard this year on their academics,
relationships, decision making and problem solving. I
am so proud of each one of them. Please keep in touch with me, as I expect great accomplishments
from this set of students.
Last week I sent a notice home detailing some of the things going on this week, but in case you
missed it, I’ve attached it below. Awards for 4th
grade are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Please remember that if your student received an
N in work/study or behavior they will not be
receiving an academic certificate for that time period. Perfect attendance requires zero
absences or tardies and superior attendance requires no
absences and less than 3 tardies.
Report cards will be mailed out on the 30th of May to those who sent pre-addressed, stamped
envelopes. The report card envelope needed two
42cent stamps on it. Today I sent home a reminder with some of the children that were still
missing stamps or envelopes. Otherwise, you may
pick up your child’s report card after that date.
Memory Books were also passed out today. I asked the students to take those home and let you see
them before they had classmates sign them.
If you want to allow signatures in the books, they may be brought back to school on Wednesday
and I'll allow time during our grade level picnic
for signing. If you didn't purchase a memory book, the PTA will be selling the what they have
left over on Tuesday and Wednesday morning in
the cafeteria.
For those with medications in the clinic, the nurse sent home a letter requesting instructions
for disposing or returning the medications. If you
didn’t see the letter, please contact the nurse.
Thank you for everything you've done for me this year. Most of you know that this is my first
year back in the public school system after taking a
break to raise my own two sons. I couldn't have imagined a more supportive group of parents to
help me get back in the swing of things. I
appreciate you!!
Have a wonderful summer!
Love,
Mary Agnew
Last Week of School Activities
Dear Parents,
Believe it or not, next week is the last week of school! We will be squeezing in the last
academic requirements, reflecting on our year, and
having some fun too.
Monday- Moving On Day and Chess
Today students will reflect over the last year. They will write and illustrate favorite fourth
grade memories. They will write letters to the
upcoming fourth grade students telling them what to expect in fourth grade.
Tuesday- Kickball day, Chess, and Final Adventures in Art
Final kickball against Mrs. Werbke's class.
Wednesday- Cleaning day, 4th grade picnic
Weather permitting, the fourth grade will enjoy an end of the year picnic during their lunch
period on the soccer field. Sub sandwiches, chips,
and cookies will be provided, but students need to bring a drink. Of course, they can buy a
school lunch or bring their own lunch if they prefer.
We will extend recess a short time in order that students may sign memory books.
Desks will be cleaned out in the morning and all papers and school materials taken home.
Thursday- Pajama, Game Day, and Finger Weaving
Please allow your child to bring in their favorite board game. No electronics! We want everyone
to socialize and play together. Last day for
bookbags to come to school!
Friday- Movie and Snow Cone Day
Students will enjoy some movies and whole group games.
Have a wonderful and safe summer!! ☺
Dear Parents,
Thank you for spoiling me during teacher appreciation week. You all are the best!
Tomorrow I am sending home your child's ID and password for the CRCT online practice test.
Please help your child get logged on for this and
have them begin practicing.
As always, I appreciate your support.
Mary
Dear Eastside Parents, The cold and flu season is upon us. I just wanted to remind you of the
Cobb County policy regarding fever and vomiting.
A student must wait 24 hours from the last temperature of 100 or less, and 24 hours from the
last episode of vomiting, before returning to
school. I know this is difficult sometimes with parents that must go to work. If everyone
followed this rule, the virus would not continue to be
passed around. Please call if you have any questions. Thank you, Tina Mansperger RN
Happy New Year!
I know 2008 is going to be GREAT! I am so excited about the new units we will be studying, but
before I tell you about them I want to rewind back to December 2007.
Can I just tell you one more time how impressed I am with your children? They worked so hard in
December. My math class aced the difficult units on multiplication and division. My homeroom
collected interesting information about the solar system which they used to write awesome essays
and make some of the most cleaver games I’ve ever seen. Honestly, some of those games could be
marketed to Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley.
Most of you know how much fun my family and I have playing games together. This holiday was
spent enjoying hearts, rummy and Yatzee, “The classic shake, score & shout dice game.” We also
enjoyed Apples to Apples, “The game of hilarious comparisons!” and Spy Alley, “The game of
suspense and intrigue!” While you and your children are playing games together, take a minute
and have them read the box to you. Ask them what advertising slogans the company used to entice
them to play the game? I wonder what advertising slogans the children could come up with to sell
their solar system games?
This next nine weeks we are beginning a unit on persuasive writing and we may just try to talk
Milton Bradley into marketing our solar system game. Of coarse we’ll need to learn how to write
a business letter in order to look official. In math we are beginning our unit on geometry.
Studying all those angles will lead us right into our science units of force and motion and
simple machines. Have you ever talked to your children about how the Egyptian Pyramids were
made? I think such a conversation could be a springboard for a talk on the units we are getting
ready to explore. Remember, studies have proven that prior knowledge of a topic is a better
indicator of comprehension than IQ. The time you spend together is invaluable. Some people say,
and I do agree with them, “Time is more valuable than money.”
That thought leads me into a long list of thanks to all of you for helping make this school year
so wonderful. First, thank you for your support in guiding your children into becoming
responsible, compassionate adults. Thank you for all the items you sent in for Toys for Tots and
the firefighters. Thank you for hosting the most incredible party for the students and for
being so very generous with your thoughtful gifts to me. You all are amazing!!
I hope you’ve had a wonderful, relaxing break. I can’t wait to see all of your children bright
and early on Tuesday, January 8. Yes, 2008 is going to be GREAT!!!
Ms. Agnew
Dear Parents,
I hope each one of you has seen the rubric for the Solar System game that is due Dec. 11. I'm
looking forward to seeing what creative ideas
come out of this assignment.
We have begun writing solar system facts on note cards. I would appreciate your help in
reminding everyone to put the following information
on their note cards; title of book, name of author, publisher, copyright date, page number and
one fact written in the student's words. They will
be using this information not only for their game, but to write an informational essay.
If your child is in my math class, you can look forward to them creating a dance to go with a
song that helps us remember the order of division
problems. This is due Dec. 11 and I can't wait to see what they come up with.:)
You may have been told that we have been having Fire Safety taught by various firefighters. I
think it would be nice to give the firefighters a gift
basket to thank them for all they do for us. If you would like to contribute food items or
letters for the basket please send it in by the morning
of Dec. 10.
Next week Mrs. Durham and I will be holding NASA camp for our students. We sent home a note
requesting items to be sent in that could help
us with the camp. Among those items are clean soup or vegetable cans. I'm hoping we can get at
least 10 clean cans sent in before this Friday.
The students picked out their biographies to read today. The books they have been loaned are
brand spanking new. I hope they will be treated
with respect and come back in very good condition. I appreciate your support with that
request. :)
East Side Elementary is holding a Toys for Tots drive. If you have any new, unopened toys that
you'd like to contribute please send them in.
We have about two more weeks of grading time for this nine weeks. Lets finish strong with no
regrets!
Please e-mail me if you have any questions, concerns or compliments!
You're the best,
Mary
Dear Parents and Students,
As I was spending the most enjoyable Thanksgiving with my family, your names and faces came into
my mind. I am so grateful that it is you who I am spending this school year with and am so
thankful to our administration for putting you in my class. Each one of you has such wonderful
gifts and talents and are such a pleasure to spend the day with. Because of your warm
compassionate hearts, all of you make it a joy to drive to school with the moon still in the
sky. I look forward to seeing you each morning.
We have just a few weeks left in our 2nd nine weeks of school. We’re going to be having so much
fun finishing up our informational text unit and solar system studies. We are going to be
studying some powerful people by reading biographies and continue our work on problem solving
and decision making.
It is my hope for you that you make decisions that will fill your life with peace, love and
laughter. Remember, a full life is filled with many mistakes.
Ms. Agnew
Parents and Students,
Mrs. Durham and I have some good news and some bad news. We are happy to welcome our new
student, Erika, to our class and we are
saddened to say goodbye to Max, who is moving to New York. Transition can be tough, but Erika
fits right in and we suspect Max will do the
same at his new school.
With the end of the first nine weeks we have finished up our units on; place value and graphing
in math, reading and writing narratives in
language arts, water and weather in science, and the regions in social studies. We are now
studying; multiplication and division by 1 and 2 digit
numbers, reading and writing informational text, the solar system and explorers.
We are going to be integrating language arts and science by having the students study
informational texts on the solar system. After great
research we will have our scientists debate their belief regarding Pluto's status of no longer
being considered a planet. After the research and
debate, we will then have the class write persausive paragraphs about their scientific belief
regarding Pluto. The students, Mrs. Durham and I
are very excited about this unit.
As always we thank you for your support.
Mrs. Durham and Ms. Agnew
Parents,
I wanted to let you know that the teacher's auction that was previously held at the Gala will
now take place at the Fall Festival. The fourth
grade teachers are taking children bowling as an auction item. I am also offering to take
students to a Wheeler and Pope High School baseball
game. The child that I take to those games will have the honor of throwing out the first pitch
of the game. I think it will be a lot of fun and hope
you will too.
As always, thank you for your support.
Ms. Agnew
Parents please read the letter from our room representative, Mrs. Lane. I'm looking forward to
seeing all of you at my first East Side Fall Festival.
Ms. Agnew
Hello again to everyone!
Thank you so much for those who have already volunteered but we still need more. The Fall
Festival is October 6th and we are needing a

can split a shift with someone, that will be great, sibling, neighbor, etc……

Also, wrist band sales have started, they are $10 per child, after Wednesday, Oct. 3rd prices go
up to $13 each. Please send a check to the PTA

We want to extend a great big welcome to Ms. Sarah Clancy. Ms. Clancy has been a
paraprofessional at East Side for many years and we are
delighted that she will get to work with us in fourth grade. The students think she is wonderful
and I agree with them. Ms. Clancy is just what
we needed and wanted to complete our classroom.
I wanted to remind you of a few upcoming events. :)
Fundraiser packets are due tomorrow, Friday, 9-14.
Our class field trip to the Atlanta History Center is Monday, September 17. Please try to wear a
blue or navy shirt. :)
Class pictures are on Tuesday, September 18. Smile!! PTA eat out night at Six Beans.
Early release is on Wednesday, September 19 at 12:20p.m.. Fun Day at Chuck E Cheese.
Parents, please continue to sign the planners next to the amount of minutes that are read at
home. This is homework every night.
Thank you for sending in umbrellas! I am updating our class wish list page.
I have told your children that they make my day such a joy. I am amazed at how excited I am to
wake up at 6 in the morning in order to get to
school. One of life my goals has been to enjoy my work so much that it is not a job. Thanks to
you and your children, I feel I have accomplished
that goal. I am completely happy here at East Side. I love teaching your children!!!
I'm looking forward to seeing all the parents at Open House Thursday, August 30th. We'll begin
with a PTA meeting at 6:30p.m.. I believe it's in
the cafeteria. We'll meet in our "cottage" after that!
As you can see I have been working on our class web page. I still need to add a few items such
as information about myself and a wish list, but it's coming along. I hope you take some time to
explore all the interesting links I've added.
I also hope all of you will add your e-mail to this page.
Please remember to send in a towel to use in making a chair/seat sack. This will allow the
students to keep their personal items close by without creating a mess.
I would also like every student to bring a water bottle with them every day.
I have really enjoyed getting to know your children. Each one has a special gift that makes our
class a wonderful place to be.
