On Tuesday, Sept. 30th, the highlight of the day included a wonderful guest speaker on epilepsy,
Rosana Esteller! She is a research neuroscientist and a fascinating presenter! We all learned
many new facts which led to many more new questions! The learning cycle continues! Please see
the letter students received to learn more details about the topics mentioned. There is a
follow up reflection and/or thank you note students are asked to complete and return next week.
These can be brought back next WEDNESDAY, October 8th.

"Brain Buzz" is Wednesday, October 8th: Students do not need to bring binders. ALL 5th grade
Target students are coming to Target on WEDNESDAY. Students will not come to Target on Tuesday
or Thursday as they usually do. If a student did not buy a sack lunch from the lunchroom, please
remember to bring lunch/drink from home. Also, students need to bring their thank you
letter/page relating to Mrs. Esteller's visit to East Side.
All 4th and 5th grade Target students are in for a treat. Students will increase their
knowledge about the brain with High Touch-High Tech, Kid Chess will challenge their brains, and
a yoga instructor will teach them how yoga can increase their concentration and calm their busy
brains. All of this brain related instruction will enhance our "Amazing Brain" unit. Thank
you, parents, for your donations and making this in house field trip possible.

This week in Target all students have learned about the ONE AND ONLY ABOVE AND BEYOND necessary
for the second nine weeks. Each student will make a caricature of themselves. Students have
received directions, a leadership traits chart to complete at home, and a rubric. I've asked
students to work with their family to brainstorm/evaluate more traits (good and bad)to add to
this assignment initiated in class. The chart and plan/sketch are due on Oct. 14th. The
project is due on October 28th. Can't wait to see the finished projects! If you have any
questions, please email me. Students have seen examples of 3-D caricatures in a book, What
Presidents Are Made Of , which I read to students this week. Fun book and timely topic!!

Finally, don't forget the East Side Foundation Capital campaign that continues through
October 10th. We are very fortunate to have a foundation that works so diligently for the
students of East Side. Just drive through the carpool lane to be reminded by the signs of all
the important contributions they have made....the fully funded science lab/instructor,
technology equipment for every classroom, 6+1 Writing, 2 new playgrounds, after school
enrichment, .... the list goes on and on. This group also provides grants directly to classroom
teachers. For example, Target teachers are very happy that our purchase of an ELMO document
reader for our classrooms is a reality thanks to the support of the Foundation. In appearance an
ELMO is similar to an overhead projector. The ELMO will enable us to share books, newspaper and
magazine articles, illustrations by projecting the image to the screen for the entire class to
view. Many thanks to the Foundation for approving this purchase. Please thoughtfully consider
contributing to this important organization. Your donations are greatly appreciated. If you see
any Foundation members, be sure to thank them for all they do for East Side and for our Target
students! They are real "worker bees" for East Side! Any questions....go to
www.eastsideelementary.com and click on the Foundation tab.
