Class News

11/11/09   Class Update - two things!
  •  If your child is missing any clothing, please have them check the lost and found by Friday this week.  Anything not claimed by Friday will be donated.
  • Fire Safety began today.  We were visited by Firefighter Clark Kelly and  students were given a Fire Safety workbook.  Their health grade will be determined by their work in the book and an end of unit test.  The firefighters would like you to please assist your child with their homework in the book.  Much of it requires students to interact with the adults in their home, and parent signature is required.  If you haven't sent in the field trip permission form for the Nov. 18th field trip to the Fire Safety Village, please send it by tomorrow.
11/9/09         Class Update!

Here we are in the middle of second quarter already!  This year is flying by!  A few things to note of late:

One For Books – In conjunction with the Scholastic Book Fair next week, students can bring in loose change to help raise money to buy books for local children’s charities.   The money will be used to purchase books to send to Norton Park Elementary School.  The money is being collected until Friday, Nov. 13th, with daily drawings for door prizes.  Any additional books we have will go to The Fragile Kids Foundation. This is a great foundation that works with families of medically fragile kids right here in Georgia. Don't forget that for every dollar we raise Scholastic will donate a book to one of their chosen charities. The top 3 classes will receive $100 in books for their classroom and the top class will also get passes to Pump It Up!  A worthwhile cause all around!

Book Fair next week!!   Our class will have our own preview time on Monday, Nov. 16th, from 9:20 to 9:40 a.m.

Field trip permission forms:  We have two field trip permission forms that have gone home in the last few days.  The first one was for the Cobb County Fire Safety Village on November 18th.  All permission forms must be in by Thursday this week!!  Also, we sent the form home for the Alabama field trip in March.   That form went home early to allow time to make payments toward the cost of it.  Please note the due dates for the payments.  I’ll send out a reminder as well.

Grades were updated last week and I will try to update them again this week.  I will tell the kids when I do.

Domino's Pizza Night
We will have our Domino's School Night on Thursday, November 12th.   Order a pizza and take the opportunity to eat dinner as a family!  Click here for information and COUPONS http://www.eastsideelementary.com/folder/62/Dominospizza.pdf

Thank you to the parents who have been sending in treasure box prizes!  The variety we’ve been getting makes it a lot more fun and rewarding for the students!

What are we working on?

Math:   We’ve moved on from 2 digit divisors although we will be revisiting it over the next few weeks periodically.  We’ve begun a unit on 2D geometry and this week we’re using protractors to measure angles.  We’ll be moving on to a discussion of triangles and quadrilaterals before Thanksgiving.

Science:  The past couple of weeks, we’ve been talking about force and motion and have started investigating how simple machines make work easier.  We will continue are study of simple machines before moving on to a study of light.

Social Studies:  Today we embarked on a journey as explorers in the sixteenth century.  For the next week, each student takes on a role as a crewmember on a ship.  They will work with the other crewmembers on their ship to make decisions and overcome obstacles on their voyage.  Will everyone make it?  Hopefully, they will gain some insight of what it was really like in those days.

Language Arts:  We are always working on improving our writing and making it clear to our readers.  In particular, we are figuring out how best to respond to our reading and summarize it for another person.
