What is the best way to study for Spanish?
Learning a foreign language requires a great deal of memorization
of vocabulary and grammatical usage rules. Some students learn
better if they write their vocabulary words several times each
while studying them. Some students learn their vocabulary best
when a parent, sibling, or friend calls the words out to them.
Some students have had success with tape recording
their vocabulary and then using the tape to quiz themselves. Try
to find a method of memorization that really works for you. If
you can, find a study partner who learns the same way you do and
study together. I have provided many practice games and exercises
on my hotlist which is found on the Links page of this website.
Go there and explore it for things that are fun and can help
reinforce your memory.
How often should I study?
Try to set aside at least 15-20 minutes a day to study and review
vocabulary. Cramming large amounts of material at the last minute
will be difficult and will not stay in your memory long enough to
serve you well. Your Spanish course will be cumulative, so you
will revisit learned information often over the two or more years
that you take Spanish.
Can I get extra help if I need it?
I can help you most any day after school. I am available less in
the mornings. I am usually at school each day, barring special
circumstances, until 3:30. You may stay any day for extra
help. Remember there are lots of teacher meetings on Thursday
afternoons. I am also available during A lunch but you will need
a pass to get to my room so be sure to let me know ahead of time.
You will need a pass to access my room before school as well, so
ask ahead. You may also seek help from any other teacher in the
department, or members of the Spanish honor society who have
offered to tutor. Find a list of those students in any Spanish
class by the end of August.
How can parents reach you at school?
I have very limited access to the telephone during the school
day. The best way to reach me quickly is through email at
di.johnson@ccboe.net or click through from the school
web site. If we must speak by telephone, the best time is after
school.
Why do we have to take a foreign language?
Colleges require that you meet a foreign language requirement
through the intermediate level, 2 years. Be aware that colleges
are now taking notice of students who complete more than the
required amount of foreign language. If you only take 2 years,
you will be on EQUAL footing with every other college applicant.
Many colleges are requiring applicants to have 3 years and as
many as 4 years of a single language. So, consider taking it
throughout your high school career. Also, you will be much more
competitive in the career world if you have the ability to speak
a foreign language and obviously, Spanish will be an important
language in your future. We offer through Spanish 4AP at
Evans High School and will offer a fifth year when interest and
the schedule permits.
Do you have an e-mail address?
My county e-mail address is di.johnson@ccboe.net and I check it
everyday. If the server is out or I can't get to the computer,
you may have to wait a day or so for a response. If your question
is urgent, feel free to call me at school.
