Opportunities to Shine

Oportunidades por excelencia:

This year there will be several opportunities for you to shine in foreign
language. As all our Spanish teachers are currently members of the American
Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, all students will be
eligible to participate in the following activities:

The National Spanish Exam (any level)
AATSP Essay Contest (any level)
AATSP Poster Contest (any level)
Sociedad Honararia Hispana - Spanish Honor Society (Spanish 2 and above)
Spanish Immersion Camp (Spanish 2 and above)

La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica has an official chapter at Evans High
School. Our chapter is named in honor of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a very
interesting hispanic figure. One is eligible to be nominated if he or she
has carried an A in Spanish for 3 semesters and is currently carrying an A
when nominated. Therefore, you must be in Spanish 2B in order to be
nominated. Freshman Spanish 2 students will not be official members until
their sophomore year, but are welcome to participate. Inductees will pay $5
towards initiation and dues to the national Sociedad. Sophomores who are
awaiting induction are welcome to participate in our activities. Induction
ceremony for new members of SHH will be held early in second semester,
usually February or March.

The Spanish Immersion Camp is held normally at a campsite in Hampton, GA
during March, usually the last weekend in March. This is a fabulous
experience. All speaking is done in Spanish throughout the weekend. This
includes playing soccer and cooking, dancing, singing, etc. This is a super
fun activity and very rewarding for those wishing to improve in their
speaking abilities. Students from all over Georgia spend the weekend
together speaking Spanish to the best of their ability and learning all
kinds of new vocabulary through the fun workshops offered. The top ten
students in National Spanish Exam scores will get a scholarship to Immersion
Camp. The cost is $85, but we will have to figure out transportation in
addition to that.

As I am also a member of The Foreign Language Association of Georgia, there
may be additional opportunities through this organization. There is a Spoken
Language Contest each year through this organization. This is a great
opportunity for those who would like to test their skills. Only two people
in each language level may go from Evans. Be sure to tell me if you are
interested. There will be two slots for Spanish 1, 2, 3 and 4. The contest
consists of a 5 minute interview between you and a judge. You will be
answering their questions on selected topics of which we are informed
beforehand.

Think about what we can accomplish for your high school portfolio/resume
this year in foreign language. You've worked hard, now let's shine!
