When you are rounding or estimating a number we use the song below to help us remember what to do. We have worked on this before and we are reveiwing this concept again now.
If you are rounding a number to the nearest tens place you look at the digit or number in the ones place. That is the bossy number and it tells the tens place what to do. If it is a 0-4 it looks at the tens place and says "Honey I love you don't change a thing! Stay the same!"
If the digit or number in the ones place is 5-9 it looks at the tens place and says "You are looking awful. Get a haircut and bump it up a notch!" and the number in the tens place goes up by one number.
You do the same thing if rounding to the hundreds place except the bossy number will now be located in the tens place.
If the bossy number is 0-4 stay the same
If the bossy number is 5-9 then bump it up!
The song below helps us to remember what to do and where to look.
We can round a number to any place so we have to read the directions carefully. We can round 453 to the tens place and the hundreds place:
locate the bossy number and let it tell you what to do!
453 to the tens: the 3 says to the five stay the same so it rounds to 450
453 to the hundreds place: the 5 says to the 4 bump it up so it rounds to 500
The Rounding Song
To Tune of If You’re Happy and You Know It
Verse:
If you’re rounding to the (tens) place, look at the (ones) 2X
If you’re rounding to the (tens) you always look at the (ones)
If you’re rounding to the (tens) place, look at the (ones)
Chorus:
If that digit’s four or lower you stay the same 2x
If that digit’s four or lower it loves you just the same
If that digit’s four or lower you stay the same
If that digit’s five or higher bump it up 2x
If that digit’s five or higher you have to bump it up
If that digit’s five or higher bump it up
