Homework is planned to begin the first week of September. I will send home a
weekly homework calendar, however, homework is due each and every morning. It
is to be completed in your child's homework notebook and I will check it
during morning work.
There are 3 parts to each week of homework.
1. Reading
2. Math
3. Phonics
Homework should take about 10-15 minutes per night. Please help your child
when needed, however, allow them to complete it independently. At this age, it
is very important for children to see what mistakes they are making and learn
from them.
What we're learning in class can continually be reinforced daily at home as
well. Use these tips in the car, at the grocery store or around the house.
These are just ideas for additional practice, they do not have to be done
every day.
1. Practice D'Nealian handwriting skills
2. Practice writing numbers 1-100
3. Find and make patterns and shapes (point out street signs, containers
at the grocery store, etc...)
4. Practice money skills (identifying coins, counting and making change)
5. Continually work with letters and sounds. One fun way is to cut pictures
out of magazines and make an alphabet book!
6. Always read to and with your child. Work on story elements such as
characters, setting, main idea and sequence of events.
7. Write stories and books with your child. Work on letter formation,
punctuation, spelling and using finger spaces.
8. Review sight words (see the list below). You can put them on flash cards
or play games such as memory matching or finding them and cutting them out of
magazines.
9. Rhyming and opposites. These can be done while cooking dinner, driving in
the car, or at any time! Ask your child, "What rhymes with _____?"
**SIGHT WORDS**
Below is a link to the 200 sight words we will be working on this year. Our
goal is to automatically read (not spell) these words by the end of the year.
There is no specific order to the words, your child may identify any of them
to meet the following standards.
1st nine weeks - 50 words
2nd nine weeks - 100 words
3rd nine weeks - 150 words
4th nine weeks - 200 words
