Class Economy

I run a "mini" economy in our classroom. Each child has a job and is paid
for their job each month. Jobs will rotate every quarter to be fair. Out of
their salary they pay taxes, rent and insurance. Each is discussed and is
related to the real world experiences. We create "laws" and also discuss and
agree on "fines" and "bonuses" for breaking laws or for being a good citizen.

They also have an AAB chart. This is signed weekly and found in the FRIDAY
FOLDER. At the end of the month they are given a bonus for how many points
they have and can buy coupons for special privileges that they normally
would not have. I also have a "$$" basket that the kids get to put their
names in when I "catch" them being good citizens. On each slip that is put
in the basket, I write the amount rewarded and reason. It is quick and
easy and does not take away from instructional time. Of course all of this
is recorded in their “checkbook” which we update as needed. This gives them
practice with “credits” and “debits” along with “transactions.” I have an
electronic checkbook (excel spreadsheet) so that I can check their math
skills!

About two times a year we hold Market Day. This is when the kids have the
chance to spend their "Nikin’s Numbers". The kids get to market, create,
buy, and sell products. This is a BLAST! Specific information will come
home about this.
