Our current academic focus:

Math -  We are working on geometry.  We will start this unit by studying 
vocabulary definitions and looking at definitions.

Spelling/English- We will start Sort 8 words.  In English, we are 
working on nouns.  Our supplemental workbooks will be use for extra practice 
as needed.

Reading/Writing - We will use some of our new mini readers and work on 
various skills such as vocabulary development, literary elements, summarizing 
and basically showing characteristis of a great reader.  Each group will have 
a reading contract and jobs to complete while reading.  This is a version of 
literature circles/novel study groups.

Science:  Our simple machines rotation day was a huge success.  What a way to 
end a great unit.  Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Hale!  We will now start a unit 
on light and sound.  Any parent that has some hands on activities is more 
than welcome to come in and demonstrate some science concepts.

Social Studies:  Our unit on explorers is ready to go!  We will be study six 
explorers: Columbus, Cabot, Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Cartier and  Hudson.  This 
will involve taking notes in an Explorers Galore Journal.  Our focus will be 
on why they explored, what obstacles they faced and what they accomplished.  
You will also be researching your own explorer as an "at-home" project.  We 
will also complete an explorers vocabulary journal.
