The deadline for the Early Action Application to UGA is approaching fast. I'm sure you're aware that the POSTMARK deadline is Oct. 15 which means that everything can still be mailed on that day as long as it's portmarked before 5:00  p.m. Most college and scholarship applications are postmark deadlines, although some are not, so it's important to know that. I have submitted close to 40 counselor evaluations and transcripts (anyone who came in and asked for transcripts for UGA). If there is anyone who wants to apply early and has not come in, they need to come see me tomorrow. When students check their status online, they'll be able to see if the counselor report has been submitted which also means a transcript has been sent. It takes them a few days to get things together and entered. Please make sure that your children have asked College Board and/or ACT to submit test results directlyto UGA. October scores can be included. This is the only way UGA accepts scores. The college reps are still on the road visiting schools and doing College Fairs. It will be November before they are done and can start looking at applications. Over 70% of applicants who enrolled at UGA last year applied  through Early Action. Students can either be accepted, deferred or denied. Deferred students will need to complete Part II of the application, get a teacher recommendation and submit their application by the Jan. deadline. Students who are denied, would have been denied even if they applied Regular Decision.

There are several reps coming the week of Oct. 20: Georgia Tech, UGA, UGA Honors, Valdosta State and Georgia College and State. Please check the Senior Year Calendar for dates and times. I am now working on other college applications. I can nominate 5 students for scholarships at Emory so please tell your students to let me know if they are interested in Emory.

Please tell your students to let me know if they are applying to any schools that need a counselor recommendation. I will need a copy of the secondary report or evaluation form and a resume. I also need to know at least 2 weeks before the due date.

I'm impressed with how diligent your children have been in completing their applications. A lot of them will be all done by the time you can smell the turkey cooking in the oven (Thanksgiving) and then they can relax a little and hopefully enjoy their senior year.

Email sent today from Christy Rikard at Georgia Southern. Please let me know if you are interested in attending this event as soon as possible and I will let her know.

I just wanted to let you know about a great opportunity for your seniors that is taking place next Friday, September 18th at Georgia Southern from 8:30 AM-1:30 PM. We are having our annual Honors Visitation Day. This is a very small event aimed at showing prospective students what the University Honors Program is all about.

We have 3 Honors Day events this fall and only about 20 students attend each session, so it's quite a small setting. The students get a lot of one on one time & exposure with the Director of the Honors Program, Dr. Steve Engel, which may give them that extra boost when it comes down to making the cut for the Honors Program/1906 Scholars next year.

If you have any students that qualify and are interested please email me back and I'll be happy to sign them up. Only a few spots remain so if they are interested they'd need to let me know asap. They need to have a 1200+ on the SAT (CR & Math only) or a 27+ ACT composite score and a 3.5 GPA.

This is a GREAT opportunity for your seniors to get an in-depth personalized look at the University Honors Program! Let me know if any of your students are interested in attending.

Please encourage your students to meet with college representatives when they visit our campus. They don't need to miss an entire block of class time but it's important to make a contact with an admissions rep of the college they are interested in being admitted to. These same reps make up the admission committee and take note of students' interest in their school. They are also a good contact for questions about the institution.  I will send a newsflash when I know a rep is visiting (see below also) and I will also post it on the Senior Year Calendar on my homepage.

Additionsl visits from Reps:

Welcome back! School starts tomorrow at 8:15. Students will receive their schedules and other paperwork that needs to be completed during their first period class tomorrow.  Please tell your students that if they don't receive a schedule, they need to find an administrator on Mansfield St. who will tell them where they need to be. Administrators will have a list of all students and their 1st period class.  Mrs. Hummel is trying to complete and change as many schedules as possible (as I write this) by tomorrow. You may want to check on Infinite Campus tonight to see if your child's schedule is correct. If it's not done by tomorrow, it will be by Friday. If your student asked for a change which might effect their 1st period class, they need to come to the registrar's office tomorrow morning before 8:00 a.m. to pick it up. Schedules will not be changed after Monday unless a student has been placed in the wrong class.

I am still not working out of my office therefore, I am not near my phone. The best way to reach me is by email or you may call Tammy Cirmotich at ext. 3203 and leave a message for me.

I hope everyone has a great start for the year tomorrow. Before we know it, it will be May.

August 3, 2009

I have posted he 2009-2010 Testing Schedule on my homepage.

There is an Open House at Glynn Academy for parents and students on Monday, August 3 from 4:30 to 7:30. Open House information for all schools is on Glynn County's homepage at: www.glynn.k12.ga.us. Check Important Dates/Events on the top right of the page.

July 28, 2009,

Mrs. Hummel has all the schedule revisions that I gave her. They have not all been corrected yet, but hopefully they will be by summer madness on Friday. You may go on Infinite Campus and review your schedules at this time.  I will be at summer madness from 1:00 - 4:00 on Friday, July 31 at Glynn Academy with the schedules and you can discuss changes with me then. Ms. Drew is making another call to remind you that summer madness is on Friday not Wednesday. Some of you have appointments to see me before school starts. We have a week after school starts to make changes so if you could not get an appointment before August 6, I will see you during the first week. My main focus will be to make sure that everyone is scheduled for classes they need to graduate!

Once I have reviewed the updated transcripts and have updated my check sheets, you will get a copy along with a letter mailed to you, including important dates and information for the senior year. I will also be updating my website with the current testing calendar and this year's schedule. I will have a parent night sometime in the next few weeks.

We have some changes in the Guidance department this year. Ms. Cirmotich will be our secretary. Ms. Gensmer will be working with our assistant principal for instruction,  Ms. Drew. Mr. Dittmar will be the sophomore class counselor. I am relocating to Mrs. Smith's office so I may be surrounded by boxes when you come see me!

I've enjoyed communicating with you , and especially your children throughout the summer. Please continue to email me. Also, visit my website and encourage your children to visit my website for college and financial aid resources. I will be posting scholarship information on there as well and of course,  I'll continue sending you newsflashes. Once the beginning of the year madness is over, I would like for students to schedule conferences for college and post high school advising.

Below is a message from Daryl Moore, Vice-President of the PTSA for 2009-2010:

The Glynn Academy PTSA-Parent, Teacher, Student Association is calling on all parents, teachers and students-yes...students to become members and volunteers for our PTSA! We're including the students this year so they can have a voice in our school.  After all, it's all about the kids!  The 2009-2010 school year is just around the corner and we need YOU! We have lots of informative programs in the works for this year. There were over 2000 students at GA last year with a PTSA membership of only 184.  Come on folks...Let's blow these numbers out of the water! Check out our PTSA website-linked to the GA website and/or our facebook page.  The cost is minimal and if you register at Open House, your name will be entered in a drawing for some fabulous door prizes!  Please stop by any of the tables at Open House to find out ways you can help!  PTSA at GA-the best way to stay "in the know" at Glynn Academy!

GHSGT RE-TESTS ARE NEXT WEEK

Monday, July 13:  Language Arts - 8:15, Social Studies - 12:15
Tuesday, July 14: Math - 8:15, Science - 12:15
Wednesday, July 14 - Writing - 8:15

Review sessions for the tests are on-going all of this week from 8:30 - 11:30.

If you have not received a schedule in the mail, it's probably because Mrs. Hummel had difficulty making it work and I will need to discuss it with her. New schedules will not be mailed home. Sudents are supposed to receive them during Summer Madness on July 31.

If you want to schedule a conference with me when I get back to school, please call the school and ask for Lynette Adams.  I am out of town and cannot schedule appointments or answer emails for the remainder of the month. I'll try to respond to those emails that I have already received.

July 1, 2009

I have a copy of all the current schedules and I'm comparing them with what I submitted to Ms. Hummel. I am pulling all those that I'm finding problems with so I can discuss them with Ms. Hummel. I'm also forwarding her your emails. She is on vacation for 2 weeks. I will be going to 2 conferences this month and will be out of town most of the month but I will find some time to meet with her. You may resume your emails to me the last week of July. Our secretary, Ms.Cirmotich will be back in the office on July 27. Please call her if you need to schedule an appointment.

June 24, 2009

I've received a lot of emails about problems with schedules. I never had the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Hummel
before I left work so I wrote out for  Mrs. Hummel what students requested. Because I don't have the master schedule I can't tell if the schedules worked. What I will do as you email me is try to work out problems via email. Since I'm not at work,  it may take me a little time to get back with you because I'm fitting emails in when I have time.  Mrs. Hummel is on a 12 month contract so she will be at GA during the summer and I can continue to work with her from home. Tammy Cirmotich is in the office until Friday so if you want to schedule a meeting with me beginning August 3rd, you can still contact her at 267-4100, ext. 3202. We still have plenty of time to get schedules straightened out.

Remember to contact the Golden Isles Career Academy if you need to complete an application or to take the ASSET test for Culinary Arts, Salon Services, Law Enforcement or HVAC.

June 11, 2009,

Schedules should be mailed by the registrar's office soon. I've also included a letter with the schedules.  We have made every attempt to give students the classes they want. I reviewed each schedule 3 times and made notes on each schedule for Mrs. Hummel. In some cases, there were conflicts with the master schedule. You may email me or Mrs. Hummel if you would like a change and we will try to make a change if it works. I will be available for appointments beginning August 3rd.We have been told that once school starts, schedules can only be changed if students are in the wrong class or they need a class to graduate.

I HOPE YOU HAVE A FUN AND RELAXING SUMMER!

Progress Reports are being mailed on Monday, June 1st. I'm including a letter and summer school brochure for any students who have failed a class either this semester or in the past so that they can hopefully be caught up entering their senior year. Summer school registration is Wednesday, June 3rd in the Media Center from 8:15 - 11:45 and 1:30 - 3:15. Summer school begins June 8 and ends June 30. Sessions are Monday through Thursday with morning session running from 8:00-12:00 and afternoon session running from 12:30-4:30. Lunch will be provided in the cafeteria for students who stay all day. Each class costs $50.00 however, financial aid is available. Since there is a very short time between grades being mailed and summer school registration, call me if you miss the June 3 registration date and I will try to get your student registered before the beginning of summer school on June 8. Students can not miss more than 2 days during summer school in order to receive credit for the class.

May 27, 2009

I will be out of the office tomorrow morning for graduation practice and will not be staying late tomorrow so I can attend graduation. Grades will be posted Friday afternoon. Please come by Friday afternoon or Monday if you need information and or registration for summer school.

Teens and parents to get straight talk about Georgia laws

The Glynn Academy PTSA has arranged for J. Tom Morgan, former
DeKalb County (Ga.)
district attorney and now a lawyer in private practice, to speak to
parents and teens
on Thursday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the school’s Memorial Auditorium.

The author of Ignorance Is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to
Georgia Law, Morgan
speaks candidly about Georgia's criminal laws regarding sex,
alcohol, drugs and
theft. Morgan, who has lectured throughout the United States,
Europe, Mexico and
Puerto Rico, is the first cousin of local Superior Court Judge
Amanda Williams. A
question and answer session with the audience will be held after
Morgan’s presentation.

Morgan will also address Glynn Academy students at an assembly on
Friday, April 17.
His presentation will help to reinforce GA Principal Dr. Steven
Ballowe’s “5 Ds –
drinking, drugs, driving, dumb and dead.”

As DeKalb County district attorney, Morgan prosecuted the first
teenager in Georgia, a
14 year old, as an adult for murder under Georgia's 7 Deadly Sins
law. Representing
teenagers who found themselves on the wrong side of the law
motivated him to write a
book that explains Georgia's laws in an easy to understand language
for teenagers and
parents. Morgan’s book will be available for purchase after the
program on April 16,
which is being sponsored by the Glynn Academy PTSA with support
from Outback
Steakhouse.

Recommendations and a current transcript. I am telling students to
complete the
registration form, giving me specific information about what they
want and when
they want it. Please sign the registration form and return it with
your student
to their English teacher the next day. I would like to have all
registration
forms to me by the end of next week before Spring break. After the

Mrs. Hummel, our registrar and I will do each schedule. If we have

community functions while
learning about leadership, community service and the financial
industry.
Students also work on
community projects. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of

STUDENTS ARE ALSO WELCOME

February 18, 2009

There are 3 things that I got today that I want to pass on to you:

I have applications for an All-Expense Paid Washington Youth Tour
for
Juniors
during June 11-18, 2009. Interested students will need to submit an
application,
resume and short office. The application deadline is March 9.

I have information on an Essay and Visual Arts Contest. Come by my
office if
you're interested. The deadline is February 27.

I have applications for a full-time summer office job at FLETC.
Deadline:
Feb. 27

I've added a link on my career icon on the new Golden Isles Career
Academy.
The
website is www.gica.us.

I am leaving tomorrow afternoon to go on the BETA Club Conference
and will
be
out of the office all day Friday.

February 13, 2009

Juniors will be taking the high stakes Georgia High School
Graduation Tests
during
March 23 - 27. They must pass these in order to graduate. The goal
is to
pass these
tests the first time but, if a student fails one or more tests,
they have
four more
opportunities to pass. After the March administration, the
following
administrations
will be in July, September, November and then March 2010. In order
for
students to
earn their platinum card, which allows them to receive priviledges
like off
campus
lunch, free admission to games, etc. they must pass all 4 of the
tests in
March.
To earn their senior stripe, they must be on track academically (16
credits) and pass
all 5 GHSGT tests, including the Writing test which was already
administered in the fall,
or re-take any they failed in July.

Some of you may have seen "516" signs around the campus. In order
for Glynn
Academy to
make Annual Yearly Progress (AYP), students must pass the English
test with
a score of
200 and the Math test with a score or 516.

The tests cover material taught in high school from grades 9-11.
Students
fail these tests,
especially in math and science because they have not had recent
exposure to
subjects they had
in 9th grade, like Biology or Algebra I. Therefore, it will be
helpful for
your child to
spend time at home reviewing the material that will be covered on
the
tests. There are 2
sites on my web page that will help: USA Test Prep and Study Island
under
the "Study Skills"
icon. Please encourage your children to spend some time reviewing
between
now and March 23.

Aslo, please encourage your children to use my web site to research
colleges and study
for the ACT and SAT tests. They can log on by going to Glynn
Academy's
homepage and then
clicking on "Departments," "Guidance" and then my name. There are 2
more
SAT and ACT
administrations this spring that students can still register for. I
will
have a parent night
in early March and visit the classrooms after the GHSGT's to talk
to the
juniors about
registration for next year.

February 9, 2009

All students who have D's or F's at 4 1/2 weeks received progress
reports
today.

February 3, 2009

I will be distributing PSAT score reports and interpreting the
results to
juniors on Wednesday,
February 4 at the end of 2nd period in the auditorium.

January 23, 2009

There will be a Financial Aid workshop for parents of seniors and
others
who are interested
on Monday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Glynn Academy Auditorium.
Information about the
HOPE Scholarship and Grant will be given as well as directions for
completing the FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This is an annual
workshop and
will be offered
again next year.

I plan on having my parent night for juniors in March before the
Georgia
High School Graduation
Tests and Registration for next year. I usaualy hold my meetings
at 6:00
p.m. but I'd like
some feed back from you if you prefer to go to meetings at 5:30,
6:00, 6:30
or 7:00. Please
email me with your preference.

January 9, 2009

Registration for Intercession begins Monday, January 12 and ends by
4:00 on
Friday, January 16. Students who have failed one or more classes
will need
to come by the guidance office to pick up the regsitration form and
schedule
for Intercession. This year, the classes will be offered at
Brunswick High
and
Glynn Academy and will last about a month. The cost is $90 per
class.
Student
must have a 60 or above in the failing class to qualify for
Intercession
and
the maximum grade that can be earned is 70. It is the only credit
recovery
option where the failing grade is replaced on the transcript and
only
classes
failed the previous semester may be taken in Intercession. Students
cannot
stay in Chemistry second semester unless they participate in
Intercession.
Classes being offered for juniors are:
American Lit.,U.S. History, Algebra II, Physical Science, and
Chemistry.
There
may be Spanish offered if there is enough interest.

Please tell your students to come see me (if they haven't already)
so that
we can make
a plan for any recovered credit. If a student chooses to get out of
Chemistry, I'll
have to adjust the schedule and he/she can take a block of science
during
their senior
year. Please email me if you have further questions. It may take me
a bit
longer to
get back to you at this hectic time of year, but I will as soon as
I can.

Also, a group of counselors took a tour of the Golden Isles Career
Academy
yesterday
and it will be awesome when it is finished in March. I have
brochures in my
office
if you would like one. High school and college students will be in
attendance
beginning this fall. Certificate programs that were offered at
Coastal will
be taken
over by Altamaha Tech so high school students will have the
opportunity to
take
college classes. Some of the programs being offered are: Broadcast
Video
Production,
Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Engineering/CAD, Graphic Communications
and
Hospitality.
This is a wonderful opportunity to get started on a career or to
explore and
experience programs that students may be interested in pursuing in
college.
You will
get more information about the Career Academy during the parent
night which
I will
schedule before registration.... More later

January 6, 2009

you need a change made, please email me with your concerns and/or
request.

I will be contacting any students that need to make up a class. We
should
be getting
the Intercession schedule soon and I will notify you when I have
it.

students in the Career Center located next to the Guidance Office.
Please

2. We
will give the tests 1st ELA), 2nd (Social Studies), 7th (Science),
& (Math)
periods 8th.

August 27, 2008

Some of your children may be experiencing stress at the beginning
of the
junior year. In part, this is due to students learning how to pace
themselves. It's a big step from 10th to 11th grade and many
students feel
overwhelmed at first but adjust to the rigor. They
will have to make the same adjustments when they go to college.
Students
who have been placed in Honors or AP classes are in these classes
because
their teachers recommended them and knew they were capable of
succeeding at
that level. If your student is experiencing stress, talk to them
about what
is causing it and what they can do differently. What are their
plans for
college? For instance, if your child is planning on majoring in pre-
med,
taking AP Chemistry or AP Calculus in high school would help
him/her when
he/she has to take it in college.

Let me know if your child is exhibiting stress and I will be glad
to talk
with them.

August 19, 2008

Dr. Ballowe, our principal and Mr. Kemp, our assistant
superintendant met
with juniors yesterday. They explained the new promotion
requirements and
the new ID badges which students received today. They also stressed
the
importance of the graduation tests and why they need to be passed
the first
time. Students who pass all tests the first time will
earn rewards.

All juniors will be administered diagnostic tests on Thursday and
Friday
during 1st and 2nd periods. These tests will determine which
students may
need remediation before taking the Georgia High School Graduation
tests.

The first graduation test juniors will take is the Writing Test
which will
be administered on September 24. The remaining tests in Language,
Math,
Science and Social Studies will be administered during the week of
March
23, 2009. Students can review for these tests by logging on to
www.usatestprep.com. Our username is: glynnacademy and the password
is: newton60.

Talk to you again soon.

August 18, 2008

WELCOME BACK!

I hope everyone has had a good beginning to the 2008-2009 school
year.
Since your students chose their classes during arena registration
last
spring, we are only making schedule changes in instances where a
mistake
was made or by parent request.

A year from now your students will be SENIORS! Are you ready?

Your children may find their junior year to be the most challenging
of
their high school career. This is the time to focus on completing
requirements to be on track for graduation, to complete
and excell in rigorous courses that will enable them to gain
entrance into
the college of their choice and to increase their GPA so that they
can be
eligible for HOPE and other scholarships. It's also an important
year for
testing: the high stakes graduation tests and college entrance
exams. You
will find this year's calendar, including SAT and ACT test dates on
the "junior locker" icon. Additionally, you will find information
on
testing and college resources if you click on the other icons.

I will continue to send you "newsflashes" and I have more
information and
resources that I will add throughout the year.I will let you know
when I am
visiting the classrooms so you can be on the look out for hand
outs and I will also have an information night for parents again
this year.
As always, please let me know if there is any way I can be of
assistance to
you and your
child.
