ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
ATTENDANCE REGULATION
September 25, 2008
Exam Exemption Incentive
As an incentive for high school students to be present each day, exam
exemption is a possibility. Students may be exempt from their final
semester exams based on the following criteria.
1. If a student has a course semester average between 90% and 100% and
has no more than five (5) absences (excused or unexcused) in the class; or
2. If a student has a course semester average between 80% and 100% and
has no more than three (3) absences (excused or unexcused) in the class.
The exam exemption possibility does not apply to state-mandated End-of-
Course Tests (EOCT). All students must take EOCTs. The state of Georgia
mandates that the EOCT exam grade count as a 15% factor in the final course
grade of the semester. This policy does not supersede any Advanced Placement
(AP) course requirements regarding exams.
Georgia Driver Permit or License
Parents and students should be aware that school attendance could have a
negative impact on obtaining or maintaining a Georgia drivers permit or
license. Georgia law requires school systems to certify that a students
attendance record permits him or her to have a Georgia drivers permit or
license. If a student has more than ten (10) days of unexcused absences in
a semester, the students name must be reported to the Georgia Department of
Motor Vehicles for Non-Compliance. (O.C.G.A. 40-5-22 a.1)
Content Mastery Exams
High school students may be absent from a class, regardless of reason, no
more than eight (8) days per semester. If a student is participating in a
school-sponsored activity (SSA), the student is considered present. If a
student is absent from any class nine (9) or more days in a semester for any
reason(s), the following procedure applies.
1. Students must demonstrate mastery of the performance standards on an
additional standards-based assessment. This exam will be administered on
Saturdays only. The grade received on this exam will count 10% of the final
course grade. Students will not fail a course due to attendance; however, a
student could fail a course for not demonstrating mastery of the performance
standards on said exam.
2. Make-up work requires time for time. For example, if a student is
absent three consecutive days, the student has three days after s/he returns
to complete any make-up work to receive full credit. Students will not
receive unlimited time to complete make-up work.
3. Students will have five (5) school days after the day the student
returns to school to submit medical or other documentation for the purpose
of validating that absences are excused. Such documentation must be
submitted by the student or parent to the schools attendance office.
STRIPES PROGRAM
To meet the increased federal standards of the No Child Left Behind
Act, Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy have instituted the "Earning
Stripes" program for rewards and identification. The program enhances safety
and security at our schools and provides incentives for students, while
simultaneously targeting student accountability, achievement and
responsibility. Students will be issued an identification badge which must
be worn at all times while on campus. Students will not be admitted to
classrooms without the badge.
While badges serve a security purpose, they are really valuable for
recognizing our students' achievements - as students are promoted and pass
the GHSGT, they will receive certain color stripes on their ID badge.
Certain stripes earn specific rewards. The ultimate stripe, Platinum Pride,
will receive admittance to GA functions free of charge and some noteworthy
discounts to area retail shops, restaurants, and movies!
Some of you may be confused about promotion requirements for the
new "Stripes" program. The flyer with the 4 badges shown on Glynn Academy's
web site depicts graduation requirements for this year's entering freshmen.
The class of 2010 requiremtns have not changed. Your students will still be
required to earn the following 22 credits in order to graduate next year:
